Don't let Bylong become bygone

20 Dec, 2010 03:00 AM
FARMERS and residents of the Bylong Valley in the Upper Hunter have vowed to fight the proposed Mount Penny coalmine.

The Mount Penny proposal hit the headlines earlier this month with confirmation that its exploration licence - bought from the state government for $1 million less than a year ago - was being sold for $500 million.

The deal involves the stockmarket-listed White Energy buying the company controlling the Mount Penny site, Cascade Coal.

Craig Shaw, interim secretary of the Bylong Valley Protection Alliance, said landowners in the region were opposed to the mine, which was proposing to produce about 5 million tonnes of coal a year.

He said it would "run across some of the best agricultural land in the Valley".

No-one, repeat no-one should even consider touching the river beds in the Bylong Valley. Groundwater will be irrevocably destroyed. Carefully positioned underground mining under adjoining hills may be possible, but an awful lot of work needs to be done to ensure no loss of recharge to the river flats. And there are numerous clifflines that are protected under current rules.

i suggest all farmers and vineyard operators sell up now and get out while you can..... the valley is stuffed. the govt only cares about money. they care little about farmers and horses. especially when they stand in the way of large mining companies. the prime minister stood up to them and was ejected quick smart. what chance a hunter valley farmer?
