Double booking takes sparkle out of dance concert

06 Jul, 2009 05:00 AM
ORGANISERS of a dance concert for 170 children are outraged after Newcastle Panthers cancelled their booking at the last minute yesterday, forcing hundreds of parents and children onto the street.

Concert producers Groove Dance Productions said they were contacted three hours before the children were due to be on stage and were told Panthers had double booked the auditorium with an NRMA travelling roadshow.

The club organised Newcastle City Hall as an alternative venue but it only angered organisers who said it was an unsafe plan because the children, aged two and above, had no time to rehearse in the new venue and it was too small.

Principal Nerrida Bushell said she booked the auditorium in February and as late as Saturday night was in contact with Panthers completing arrangements, with no word about the change.

She said had spent $15,000 organising the concert and would lose some of that because of the change of venue.

Ms Bushell said some parents and relatives had travelled from interstate for the concert and said Panthers had behaved unprofessionally.

"I've got these kids running into the audience and doing lifts and I tried to explain you can't just change venues it just doesn't work like that," she said. "They're actually ruining my business, not to mention ruining the kids' day."

Panthers general manager Luke Walker said the club would reimburse the booking fee, cover the cost of hiring City Hall and the cost of transport to the hall.

Mr Walker said they also provided staff and refreshments at the City Hall.

He there was an "issue with the room" and there would be a full investigation into the handling of the event.

"We pride ourselves on our high service standards," he said.

"We have gone to every effort to make sure the event was a success."

Belinda McNamee, of East Maitland, said it was "disgraceful" the children had been forced to move to City Hall after rehearsing for almost a year.

Disgraceful conduct by Panthers Newcastle. Panthers should at least pay 20,000 dollars and rebook the concert for free.

Sob Sob, makes another nice bad news story. Ms Bushell you are getting your money back, Panthers paid for the town hall and provided refreshments. What more do you want??Blood as well? Payment for attending as well?? People do make mistakes you know. Not a bad outcome I would have thought. (P.S. it must have been some concert as at a claimed $15,000 equates to about $100 per child.)

Maybe it's about time Novocastrians start to boycott these Sydney operated Clubs, and support the locally operated clubs that look after the local community, don't walk all over them. Why couldn't the club move the NRMA road show to the City Hall.

Panthers has taken the club backwards.

Whats all the brew-ha-ha all about? Didn;t Panthers refund them, pay for the Town Hall, provide refreshments and transport to the Town Hall??? The dance group were not out of pocket, in fact probably gained out of the excersize. Why don't we give these guys a break.

Typical. The wealthy and powerful concerns get the priority and those that matter (children and family) get the raw deal. The NRMA should have been relocated.

I agree. I am a member of NRMA and it woul;d of been much easier. These kids work hard. Put alot of effort in.The moves are done for the area. I am sure putting tables in is MUCH easier. Making it so late letting someone know is dreadful as well. Something like this could of been held in the OLD POST OFFICE if it had been maintained. Either party could of used it.
