EARTH HOUR : Powerage unplugged for environment

20 Mar, 2009 09:06 AM
THEY are called Powerage, but their message is about powering down for Earth Hour.

The shooting stars of the Hunter's music scene took time out from the launch of their EP Get Ready last night to encourage people to switch off at 8.30pm on Saturday, March 28.

Singer and guitarist Zac Crawford, 14, said the band and their friends were looking forward to switching off to help the environment.

"I think heaps more people are into it this year," he said.

"It's great that we are going to be saving so much power in an hour. It's really going to help the environment."

Older brother and drummer Ben Crawford, 18, said band members were conscious of their power consumption in the traditionally energy-intensive music industry.

"We try and stay conscious of how many amps we turn on and stuff like that, especially when we get our electricity bill," he said. "Mum always freaks out because we are always rehearsing."

The launch of Powerage's debut EP at Stockland Greenhills last night followed their success at last year's Global Battle of the Bands where they won Australasian Best New Band.

i think earth hour is a load of rubbish. we should all be turning off any unnecessary electrical appliances, lights etc every hour of every day of the year. when i go to shopping centres and see the number of unnecessary lights blazing i wonder why? some shopping centres even have light fittings in their skylights and lights around the perimeter of the carparks where there is plenty of natural daylight and they only need to be turned on at night. totally unnecessary.

I totally agree with onedozen. Earth Hour is so tokenistic it's not funny. Meanwhile everyone spends their weekends in Westfields consuming consuming consuming. CO2 = global warming is rubbish too.

Agree with you "onedozen" and " Smokygrayson" that the hype around events like this is confused and possibly not effective. The guys in Powerage may be using a lot of power to get across the message that we all should power down and avoid waste. This is good if it achieves awareness that they would like to raise. We need to be frugal with our resources. People like BONO however would set all the worlds amplified musicians a real and sincere example if his band went acoustic. Until people like Bono go acoustic their leadership may not be taken seriously.

Smokey I like the equation CO2 = global warming is rubbish. The AlGores of the world can huff and puff all they like but man has pretty much no effect on earths warming or sea levels. People need to have a think about the facts. All the carbon now being burned was taken originally from the air before it became coal or wood. CO2 is not a poison as we are told on a daily basis by politicians. I suspect that politicians are pushing global warming to divert attention from the real issues, which they refuse to address, like chemical pollution. The Hunter river sludge being dumped at sea and poluting Stockton beach is an example.
