Ebony's mother sentenced to life in jail over starving daughter

02 Oct, 2009 09:02 PM
A mother who starved her seven-year-old daughter to death inside a Hawks Nest home has been sentenced to life in prison.

Her husband, who was found guilty of manslaughter for ignoring the child's deteriorating health, has been sentenced to spend at least 12 years behind bars.

Supreme Court Justice Robert Hulme said the crime was in the "worst case category".

Justice Hulme said the mother's conduct towards her daughter was "cruel, callous and heartless" as she watched the girl deteriorate from a chubby six-year-old who weighed 20 kilograms to an emaciated nine kilograms at her death.

He said Ebony, if she had continued to grow, from her previous weight, would have weighed 26 kilograms at the time of her death.

The girl was autistic and had been taken only infrequently to doctors and her wellbeing was neglected by her parents, the judge said.

Justice Hulme said the little girl had been locked in her room frequently and had been left out of family celebrations and did not appear in family photographs from birthdays or Christmases from about July 2006.

He said at the time her appearance was becoming more and more pitiful.

Still struggling to understand why the father is any less guilty. They both should get life.

There was a time when children in our community were monitored by government agencies. This event could not have happened 50 years ago. We aren't getting good value from our Government and politicians. Human life is not valued. How can a child disappear from official records and not be noticed as missing from school attendance and continuing health records.

GeorgeJ, You are spot on.I am still unable to fathom how the father is less negligent than the mother. It makes me wonder what has become of our country & the powers that be.

I agree with GeorgeJ , however it has to be remembered the government didn't do this - it's the scumbag , druggo filth that are allowed to raise kids these days and are then pandered to by a social security system that rewards both laziness and complete abrogation of moral and legal responsibility to the poor kids unfortunate enough to be stuck with these grubs as parents. I don't know how or when it came to pass that we stopped caring enough about our kids as a society to allow this type of thing to happen.

One gets the impression that these parents were operating beyond their mental capacity and should have been supervised and supported in the community with their child raising responsibilities. The failure is not just theirs Mr Justice, it is the entire community and government that is to blame. Perhaps the mother is best cared for in the womens prison environment where she will have her physical needs provided for and activities to engage her mentally. It is shameful what Australian society does to its less capable citizens who although they are 'free', are left to rot in a horrible existence of incapacity breeding incapacity and poverty. At least she is now 'freed' of the burden of freedom.

I agree. The loser father should have got the same sentence as the mother. Claiming he didn't know what was going on in his drug addled state is no excuse. This is about a severe lack of responsibility on both their behalves. I just can't fathom how they could treat a little girl worse than a stray dog. May they both rot in jail.

Is there no minimum level of intelligence and morality required to be a parent? None at all? If the answer is 'no', we should not be too surprised to hear of families such as these, and awful outcomes such as Ebony's. When parenting was mainly the province and responsbility of females, it was not considered worthy of much prestige, let alone financial reward. However, raising children, even to an adequate (rather than excellent) standard, is a demanding and difficult occupation. Perhaps we need to start to recognise this. Being able to get together to conceive one or more children is no proof at all of a couple's bona fides as committed and capable long-term parents. What great strides did the father of this child achieve to be worthy of a lesser judicial penalty, one wonders.
