Elderly man caught filming Avatar for his wife

19 Feb, 2010 08:21 AM
AN 88-year-old man caught filming a screening of Avatar with a hand-held camera told police he was recording the film for his wife, who could not attend the cinema.

The elderly man was approached by the manager of the cinema at Glendale yesterday afternoon and police were called.

Police described the alleged film pirate as being 88 years old, about 152 centimetres tall, wearing large glasses and carrying a walking stick.

He said his wife couldn't come to the cinema, so he was recording the film for her to watch later.

Police deleted the file from the man's video camera and allowed him to continue watching the film.

if this was a sixteen year old who said that he was doing it for his invalid grandmother I wonder if the result would have been the same........ i think not.

Was there any real need to waste the police time with this matter? Wouldn't just asking the man to leave have been sufficent? This copyright nonsense is way out of control. No one would really bother going to extremes like this if the film was available on DVD at a reasonable price.

and if it was, lets say. a guy in his 30's or 40's, he would have been arrested

Bad bugger. Have to watch these film pirates dressed as frail old men with walking sticks. Shame on the Manager at for calling the police. Why couldn't they just explain to the old bloke that he was doing something illegal?

Please Please, Im sure that the Lake Macquarie TAG officers had much better things to do than this. With the amount of violent crime in the community I'd think the Police Resources namely the Crack Special Detective working for them would have been things to do other tahn attack this poor elderly gentlemen

Lucky the Lake Macquarie police command centre at Boolaroo is so handy to the Lake Cinema. Who knows what huge losses the movie industry could have suffered from this brazen act of piracy. It was very nice of the police officers to allow him to continue watching the movie. I think he deserved a free choc-top, and one to take home for his wife.

I just hope the theatre managment have made arrangements for the elderly couple to view the entire film together with out police involvement.

This makes me feel really sad for the old man and his wife :( He was trying to do a nice thing for his wife, who may be unable to leave the house to see the movie. Sure it is illegal, but I hardly think it is worth calling the police over. The police would be better off spending their time on more serious issues.
