Elderly pirate filming Avatar for wife at Glendale

20 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
AN 88-year-old man caught filming a screening of Avatar with a hand-held camera told police he was recording the film for his wife, who could not attend the cinema.

The elderly man was approached by the cinema manager at Glendale on Thursday afternoon and police were called.

Police described the alleged film pirate as being 88 years old, about 152 centimetres tall, wearing large glasses and carrying a walking stick.

He said his wife couldn't come to the cinema, so he was recording the film for her to watch later. Police deleted the file from the video camera and let the man stay.

If Events Cinemas (Greater Union) had any sense, they would get hold of the movie's distributors and seek permission or approval for a private showing of the movie at the man & wife's home. Perhaps Harvery Norman or Good Guys could set up a temporary, but comfortable, audio/visual experience for the couple and market the public relations exercise as grand gesture of good will. The media (even international media) would love it and it would demonstrate that even in today's complex rules and laws and technological craziness ... the is still some basic decency and humanity amongst us. What a joy to read what lengths an old man would do for his housebound wife.

well, I guess at that age you can't afford to wait until the DVD release

This has got to be the most pathetic use of Police time I've ever heard of. Let the poor old 88 year old go for his life with the video and let the Police get on with what Police should really be doing - like stopping vandalism, violence and all the other nasties. Whoever reported this man to the police should hold their heads in shame too. They might even have had the heart to instead promise to hire the video for him and throw in some 3D glasses as well!

Disgracefull conduct on behalf of the theatre management. Just a bit of diplomacy and a bit of tact would have had the same outcome. I just hope management will arrange for the old couple to attend the film without police intervension.

Poor bugger! Just trying to do something thoughtful for his wife and he gets busted! I'm sure he wasn't going to pirate it, if he is anything like my Nan he's not up to date with all this new fan dangled technology :D

Rotten Tomatoes on the Cinema Manager, seriously he could have deleted the damn thing himself, but to call the cops on an 88 yr old? Douchebag... Kudo's for the cop who deleted and let him stay to finish watching it. Give me his address, I'll send him a copy.

Put him in prison and throw away the key! That, or find some compassion and help the man and his wife out.
