Equine nannies near Scone saving foals' lives

12 Aug, 2009 05:00 AM
EVERY child star has their own nanny and at Pine Lodge near Scone there is no shortage of minders.

These nannies may be of the equine variety, but they are saving the lives of orphaned or neglected foals. They are also helping to keep the region's thoroughbred industry strong, saving breeders millions of dollars.

Lisa and Jonathan Randle started Hunter Nursing Nannies in 2001 and have fostered more than 500 foals.

"We had a number of Clydesdale mares and we were getting calls from people asking if they could borrow our mares to foster their foals which had become orphaned or their mothers were unable to feed them," Mrs Randle said.

One of the most recent matchings has been the Randle's Clydesdale cross stockhorse mare Madeline, with a filly at Coolmore Stud at Jerrys Plains.

The foal is by Encosta de Lago a champion Australian stallion. The filly's mother died due to complications post foaling.
