Flash flooding hits Hunter

11 Feb, 2012 12:04 PM
HEAVY rain lashed the Hunter yesterday causing flash-flooding in Newcastle and forced the closure or evacuation of several businesses.

Weatherwatch meteorologist David Sercombe said Adamstown was the hardest hit with 20 millimetres of rain falling in half an hour.

"That sort of rainfall is quite intense but we didn't see the predicted strong winds to go with it," he said.

"The storm developed over Wollemi National Park in the west and made its way east where it collided with another storm in the Lower Hunter about 4pm."

Hunter Region duty officer Mandy Haigh said the State Emergency Service had received 14 calls for assistance between Singleton and Lake Macquarie by 6pm.

"Most of those jobs were for leaky roofs or maintenance issues," she said. "There was so much force behind the rain the drains just couldn't cope."

Go-Lo was evacuated and several Hunter Street businesses closed as a wave of water washed down the mall.

Newcastle Regional Library foyer was flooded but the building did not need to be evacuated.

Save Our Figs spokeswoman Caity Raschke said the benefits of the 14 Laman Street figs, which were felled over the past week, had been revealed by nature.

My, those fig leaves must have been HUGE, in order for anyone to think they could hold back a weather event . Did they have down pipes too?

Why would you involve SOF on a weather report?

Only 20mm of rain in half an hour? My mates in Brisbane and on Wednesday, they copped one hell of a storm. Where he lives on the Southside, they copped 68mm in 40mins!. We get nothing down here compared to what they get north of the border.

Of course someone from SOF would have to throw in their 20cents worth.

What benefit? The figs somehow magically kept freak weather away?

Please stop giving Save Our Figs any more time in the media. The figs are gone along with 1.2 million council dollars.

maybe NCC shouldve been concentrating on fixing the drainage problem in Newcastle CBD after the Pasher Bulka fiasco instead of worrying about trees, i for one dont venture into the city when the rain is here as i see what lays in the drains around town, and if i can see it why cant they????

Id imagine the figs offered protection & shelter & when the rain hit they would of had difficulty getting the doors closed against the weathers bombardment. I imagine piles of woodchip along the gutters wouldnt have helped the drainage system at all either. what a mess.
