08 Sep, 2010 09:49 AM
A FORKLIFT and driver plunged into Newcastle Harbour this morning when passengers were disembarking from the P&O Cruises luxury liner Pacific Sun at Dyke Point.

Ambulance officers were called to the scene at 6.55am to rescue the 33-year-old driver who was taken to hospital and is understood to be in a stable condition.

The accident happened during unloading operations but it is understood no passenger baggage was lost into the water.

Newcastle Port Corporation spokesman Keith Powell said investigations into how the incident occurred were on-going.
