A BUS driver who professed his love for a 13-year-old girl after forging a relationship with her via the social networking website Facebook pleaded guilty yesterday to procuring her for sex.
Wayne Robert Mulhearn, 45, described the victim as "My Wingless Angel" when he sent a dozen red roses to her while she was at school on her birthday and a gold necklace for Christmas, a police statement tendered to Newcastle Local Court said.
Mulhearn, formerly of Raymond Terrace now of Bankstown in Sydney, pleaded guilty to procuring the girl for sexual activity and having sexual intercourse with a person between the ages of 10 and 14.
He will face East Maitland District Court on a date to be fixed.
Mulhearn befriended the girl when he drove afternoon school runs for Hunter Valley Buses in the Maitland area in 2008, the statement said.
They talked about themselves and became Facebook friends in early 2009 before regularly chatting to each other online.
They expressed their love for each other and a desire to be together before Mulhearn wrote "Wish you were with me 24/7".
The girl replied: "If I could do whatever I wanted I would be in your arms."
Mulhearn met the girl at the side of her house at 12.30am one night where they kissed and he performed a sex act on her before her father woke up.
Mulhearn fled, but the father saw him outside the house and asked who Mulhearn was.
Mulhearn gave his name and said his car had broken down.
Police were notified when the girl's school alerted the mother about the roses being delivered with a card addressed to "My Wingless Angel".
Mulhearn was arrested and charged in March.
