Free broadband in Hunter St mall

Free broadband in Hunter St mall

21 Mar, 2009 03:00 AM
WIRELESS broadband internet will be offered for free in the Hunter Street Mall in an initiative designed to attract visitors to the area.

Not-for-profit company Renew Newcastle, which was established late last year to find short- and medium-term uses for vacant inner-city buildings, is working on the project with hosting company Ipera.

They expect to have wireless internet available in the next month.

Renew Newcastle board secretary Marni Jackson said the service would help creative arts projects in mall shop fronts, which would otherwise face great expense to install broadband.

It is hoped the free technology will also encourage visitors and shoppers to frequent the mall, which has struggled to attract business and tenants in recent years.

"If you're there at lunch with your laptop and want to send an email, it will be usable," Ms Jackson said.

"We thought providing the WiFi [internet network] was another attraction for people to use this place and use the area."

It follows the introduction in July 2007 of free wireless broadband internet at Beaumont Street, Hamilton.

Suzie Bailey and Jackie Smallcombe said they would connect a laptop to the service to help in running their handmade clothing and jewellery outlet Make Space, a Renew Newcastle project opening soon in the mall.

I go to McDonalds because I can get fries with my WiFi!

This is fantastic. I was recently in Gosford's old city centre and it was dead. I was thinking about how free wifi would attract people to this stagnant retail ghost town. There was an old guy rocking out on an electric keyboard outside a music store though - that was quality.

Admirable sentiment. Good work. Well intentioned. Complete waste of time. "If you're there at lunch with your laptop and want to send an email, it will be usable". For everybody else, it is utterly meaningless, and will make not one iota of difference.

Nice to see this happen in Newcastle. A great and effective means of driving traffic into the area.

i agree that with all the crime in newcastle city, you could need a body guard to get your lap top to and from the mall...what we need is those tv cameras that they have on the bill (tv show on abc),to deter crime.can they be set up somehow using this new free internet facility?? newcastle is full of thugs, and i dont recommend it to tourists at all after dark. i have a family member who was visiting ncle from ireland, took his partner out for a romantic dinner in newcastle city, got mugged partner got assaulted....now none of my relations want to come back here....can u blame them??? they think i am mad for staying here.... newcastle has a lot of growing up to do!!!
