Frisky devils to rock the ark

Frisky devils to rock the ark

26 Dec, 2011 03:00 AM
WHAT more could a frisky Tasmanian devil want for Christmas than to be let loose in the Devil Ark sanctuary in the Barrington Tops?

Another 50 devils were released last week in preparation for the breeding season.

Ten of the devils were brought from Tasmania.

‘‘We want to get them from Tasmania for as long as we can because the [facial tumour] disease is going to annihilate them in their native environment,’’ Devil Ark operations manager Tim Faulkner said.

‘‘They are also important to boost the genetic stock.’’

The devils have been configured into breeding groups of between six and eight for the breeding season, which starts in February.

About 90 devils now live at the Devil Ark project.
