Gas drill protest rally today

26 Nov, 2010 03:00 AM
A protest rally will be held at Newcastle City Hall today about the NSW government's decision to approve a controversial plan for exploratory gas drilling 55 kilometres off Newcastle.

The rally will coincide with a community consultative meeting set up to consider the project.

Rally organiser and Hands Off Our Coast spokeswoman Phillipa Parsons said the application was approved without proper consultation.

Ms Parsons said Hunter residents were in the dark about the "real and potential risks to our marine and coastal environment".

Greens MP and mining spokeswoman Cate Faehrmann said a federal inquiry report released on Wednesday about last year's Montara oil spill off the Northern Territory was a "grave warning" for Novocastrians.

The spill lasted for 10 weeks and leaked 29,600 barrels of oil into the Timor Sea.

She said it raised questions about the NSW government's ability to regulate offshore petroleum exploration.

"Novocastrians are right to be deeply concerned about potential environmental impacts associated with the [Newcastle] approval," she said.

Advent Energy, through its subsidiary company Asset Energy, plans to begin drilling in December.

Drilling will take up to 30 days in 143-metre-deep water, with a well-depth of 826 metres.

Preliminary studies estimated 13.2 trillion cubic feet of gas worth $50 billion was in the company's offshore petroleum licence area from Newcastle to Wollongong.

The drilling could lead to a natural gas industry with the potential to create tens of thousands of jobs and generate billions of tax dollars for government.

Same old protestors same old protest. Anything to stop the progress of Newcastle. One big question?. Will the drilling rig be visible.

How about an alternative rally - Hands off our Future... Where we stand up to the miserable minority that try to ensure that no development of any kind ever happens in or around Newcastle. We have already lost the regeneration of the city centre thanks to the dinosaur lobby. We are not a small country town. The population of the Hunter will grow and I want to see a good mix of industry and employment in years to come. Natural gas will be a vital resource for many years and $50 billion is too much not to be involved. Support this initiative before we are left to stew in our fear of change and lose yet another opportunity to build the city we deserve.

The real risk is the loss of jobs, would be, if the suburbanites had their way. They say they care for the environment. What then of the reality of thousands of positions being available from the project. The group seems very selective. They, presumably, are opposed to coal extraction, now they are opposed to natural gas exploration. Perhaps they would be very happy if we just rubbed two sticks together and h0ped for the best. But if the sticks came from a tree, what then of this effect on arboreal restoration. I certainly hope someone speaks to them. They must feel very lonely.

These Community Consultative Committees are not working as intended. It is a Community Insult not Consult!

It seems silly to hold a rally when everyone works? You would not get the desired result.

just hearing the Advent CEO on abc radio spruiking how the Nature Conservation Council hasnt returned calls & emails. Are we meant to assume that ONE groups inaction will ensure the marine environment will be protected? For god sake your CCC's dont even have enforceable rules. Pissy guidelines and micro managed powerpoints. Im amazed industry conferences & the state government havnt developed a board game on these procedures. call it "TICK A BOX".

The same old protestors, At least its not coal this time but a clean sauce of energy. The drilling platform might be a bit unsightly, but fifty five klm's off the coast, who's going to see it.
