Gas drilling off Newcastle starts in October

28 Aug, 2010 04:00 AM
EXPLORATORY drilling for natural gas will take place about 30 kilometres from the coast of Port Stephens in October.

Advent Energy, which has government approval to extract gas and holds the state's only offshore petroleum licence, said its first exploration well would be directly east of Newcastle.

The well is about 55 kilometres from Newcastle, and about 30 kilometres from the nearest land site at Boat Harbour.

Advent has contracted the 2560 megaton rig Ocean Patriot to conduct the drilling.

The executive director of Advent's parent company MEC Resources, David Breeze, said earlier this month it would be the first time such drilling had occurred off the NSW coast.

"The state and federal governments are looking for gas as a source of electricity generation," Mr Breeze said.

"Gas-fired power stations produce 60 per cent less carbon dioxide emissions than coal-fired power stations."

The objective of the project is to drill a well 826 metres below the ocean floor and to test for the presence of gas.

Advent is licensed to explore an 8100-square-kilometre area from Wollongong to Newcastle.

Gas reserves in the area are estimated at 13.2 trillion cubic feet and valued at about $50 billion.

The gas could also have industrial and domestic uses, and the project could create 300 full-time and 2000 construction jobs.

So the gas produces 60% cleaner emissions than our coal fired power stations. Sounds good to me.

Glad to hear that the exploratory drilling plan is on track and if everything goes well, it would add job opportunities. As it would also create additional revenue for the State budget, we also hope that the revenue will be subject to fair distribution, to the benefit of Newcastle area. Unlike the project for the re-development of Newcastle, the drilling project has earned a quick approval of the government. It seems that the govnt is able to take decisions and to act when it's in the interests of the State, mostly Sydney. As usual, shall the work force be from the local area, but the profit earned will be shared between the private company and the State government while by passing Newcastle?

Dont let BP be a part of this operation, with the hope that another leak will not occur.

The gas reserves in Australia must be utilized for our domestic use as part of the strategy from king coal dependency. Gas is cleaner!

Whose city will make the money jimmy? They are closest to Port Stephens Shire so they will get some benefit from people working on this, not Newcastle.

Bill, where do you think the workers will come from, all those old retirees in Port Stephens. All the skilled workers are in Newcastle.
