Gay community plans peaceful rally at church

16 Feb, 2012 08:12 AM
SUPPORTERS of the Hunter gay and lesbian community are expected to rally outside Wallsend Presbyterian Church today in support of gay marriage.

The church stirred controversy this week after posting an anti same-sex marriage noticeboard message: ‘‘Even tradies know you need both male and female joints to make a marriage’’.

As reported in the Newcastle Herald yesterday, the Nelson Street church, built in 1867, was vandalised on Monday night with slogans such as ‘‘sexuality is not a choice’’ and ‘‘love thy neighbour, not hate gays’’ spray-painted over exterior walls. Most of the graffiti was removed yesterday.

Rally organiser Wayne Mason said the gay and lesbian community had organised a protest against the church’s stance through social-networking site Facebook.

Mr Mason stressed the 4pm rally would be peaceful.

‘‘We’re not going to be violent ... we respect [the church’s] right to their views,’’ he said.

If you "respect the church's right to their views", why stand out the front of their property to protest.

What if they did the same to you?

And no, I am not anti gay or a member of the church.

A.B is exactly right.

You "respect the church's right to their views" but will still push your own beliefs on them by protesting outside.

Extremely hypocritical if you ask me.

How would you like it if the church protested out your place or The Gateway Hotel in Islington?

Just accept that not everyone agrees with gay marriage.

This sign was a protest - They have a right to return fire with their own protest.

I have no anti gay sentiment either, but protesting outside a church, what do they think that is going to achieve?

Ive never seen a group so determined to draw attention to themselves. So you are gay...who cares. You have no shock value left. The community doesnt care! Run off and be gay if you like...just shutup about it.

Gay is not the norm??? Get a grip. What is normal?? Can you answer that? Probably not. Normal is just a word used by those who are scared of the difference in everyone. No such thing as normal.

The Rev Ian Copland deliberately initiated this controversy. What exactly did he expect would happen? The days when churchmen could thunder from the pulpit have long gone. The Wallsend Presbyterian Church probably has a seriously diminishing congregation anyway for good reasons. Lets hope that Copland learns something from all this.

Good for them :)

Hopefully, some tradies will join them in this protest. That sign was insulting on so many levels.

The Wallsend church members should protest outside some of the gay haunts in Newcastle. Oh, no they could not do that becasue it would be discrimination.
