A TOP-CLASS mountain bike trail network will officially open in Glenrock State Conservation Area today.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service worked with mountain bike enthusiasts to establish 14 kilometres of trails.
"Mountain biking is the new walking," Glenrock ranger Tiffany Knott said.
"These days I get more mountain bikers in Glenrock than I do walkers."
Authorities noticed several years ago that illegal mountain bike trails were proliferating in the area.
By allowing legitimate access in less sensitive areas, officials hope riders will stop creating illegal trails.
Glenrock Trail Alliance co-ordinators Mick Plummer and Leonard Allen worked with the wildlife service. The service enlisted a world-renowned trail consultant to oversee and approve the work.
Today's opening, including guided tours, demonstration bikes and a free barbecue lunch, runs from 10am to 3pm, with the meeting place at the corner of Gun Club Road and Fernleigh Loop, Highfields.
