GPT closures to be agreed

02 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
NEWCASTLE City Council is set to formalise an agreement with the GPT Group to close and sell city roads to make way for proposed development in and around Hunter Street Mall.

If councillors agree tonight to the closures, an application will be submitted to the NSW Land and Property Management Authority.

Affected areas are: Thorn, Morgan and Laing streets and parts of Wolfe and King streets.

It would formalise an agreement that GPT and the council announced in September 2008.

Would GPT still be interested if they knew the train line was closing??

why do we sell our souls to the developers buck? how on earth can you close off some of king street? its a main road. ludicrous. i just cant believe that we let the developers, who have one thing in mind - money, dictate terms to us. developers dont care two tosses about newcastle or its residents. please get rid of this current council. they are terrible. get some people on the council that have the best interests of newcastle at heart. i dare not suggest that they are lining their pockets.... but what on earth they are thinking is beyond me. are there not enough vacant city blocks to develop without taking the land being used for transport? look at the abysmal "square-about" that lurches around the crowne plaza now. are we going to get more of this totally incompetent town planning? - or lack of it. what about hunter streets "re-opening"? laughable. keep an eye on this shifty lot everyone. developers and council.

This should not be considered until the DA is lodged. What happens if GPT do not proceed? Why will a retail development succeed?

How ludicrous that part of King Street should be sold of to GPT. How will this impact on traffic congestion? Will it be a sell off of the full width of King Street between Perkins and Wolfe streets, forcing unsuspecting motorists into the GPT carpark? It is totally inappropriate to sell off streets when traffic is getting worse daily. NCC needs to be transparent with this and publish a map showing residents how this will effect traffic.flow.

NCC will do what they want. I thought they were for the People.

The closure of King Street within that proposed area could also mean GPT have an agreement on Cathedral Park. Ownership of properties west of this area is of interest. The state government should make a decision much sooner than later on the fate of the rail. GPT state their ongoing commitment is contingent with the rail removal.

Why can we not biuld over railways as they do in other countries it is not that hard the State Govt owns the land either side of the corridor! Either way if the State Gov't and local council proceeded with the initial blueprint incorporating a flyover down at Hannel st leading into Honeysuckle we would not be having this talk about the rail line dividing the city

GPT should disclose what they are going to do with these streets when the announcement that the rail is to remain is made official.

GPT has about as much chance of being established as a fish shop at North Reef!
