Greek Orthodox community call to save Bogey Hole

29 Dec, 2009 04:00 AM
THE Hunter's Greek community has joined calls to keep Newcastle landmark the Bogey Hole open.

The Herald revealed last week the Hunter icon was under threat by a plan to revitalise Newcastle's coastline, which suggested closing public access to the swimming spot because of safety concerns.

The Newcastle Greek Orthodox community has used the Bogey Hole for its blessing of the water ceremony each January for more than 50 years.

Greek Orthodox Parish of Newcastle rector Father Nicholas Scordilis said he hoped the 2010 scheduled celebration at the Bogey Hole on January 7 would not be their last.

"It's very upsetting that this year could be our last year," he said.

"It doesn't matter what reason it is, it's very wrong to take it away from the people of Newcastle."

Father Scordilis said he would write a letter to Newcastle City Council calling for the Bogey Hole to be kept open.

The Greek Orthodox parish is one of many communities in the Hunter with a link to the Bogey Hotel.

The swimming spot has played a role in the region through the decades.

The Bogey Hole was created by Newcastle military commandant Major James Thomas Morisset who had it cut into coastal rocks between 1819 and 1822 for use as his personal bath.

It later became a recreation space for the elite, was opened to the public in 1863 and went on to become key venue for early feminists who petitioned for more hours of use for women around the turn of the century.

The swimming spot was originally 4.5 metres by two metres but was substantially enlarged in 1884 to its present size.

There should be no question of closing it.

When will the Authorities listen and act upon the Community wishes. Such a wide diverse section of our community use and appreciate the Bogey Hole and instead of fixing it and making it safe the wizards of stupidity are going to shut it down. No they can not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This area of Newcastle has every right to be repaired as it is part of the King Edward Park precinct which is now part of all novocastrians heritage and used by a lot of children. How does one tell their children that that can't go to the Bogey hole for a swim as it is the most undermaintained icons in Newcastle itself as it did have a public toilet decades ago which was at the top of the stairway & used by many. Of all the Councillors of Newcastle City Council who has used the Bogey Hole in there lifetimes? Those who say they haven't, aren't from here. All Novocastrians have used the Bogey Hole one of the most famous swimming holes in Newcastle Australia as it has been put into NSW Ocean Bathes site that will tell people the signifigance of the Bogey hole itself and Heritage status www.nswoceanbathes.com.au It was the first commandment in Newcastle that built the Bogey hole for solider use only which was built in the 1818 and completed in 1822, just under 200 yrs old. The Bogey Hole has been here longer than any ocean bathes built in Australia and how much does it cost for ocean bathes restorations to the Bogey Holes restoration. The Bogey Hole wins hands down ie: chain & poles.

Anything connected with "a plan to revitalise Newcastle's coastline" has got to be suss. What are they trying to palm off on us this time? Will it be (a) terminal indecision until it rots or (b) mindless corralling by the bland generic? We can mostly read, write and vote in Newie now but who would know? I did some family history last year and what a revelation. Our town is a Powerhouse Museum in waiting to be switched on. Where are the local history buffs with dynamic nous? The incredible founding past is vanishing in ignorance and neglect, consigned to trash along with our anonymous forebears chained to the rocks to drown in Major Morisset's bathwater.

Okay Newcastle. Why dont we all go to Canberra. Maybe we should not use the Pools owned by the council. They say Newcastle is moving on with everything. Soon there will be NOTHING left of the older Newcastle.Lets get rid of some of the older people in Council and move on then.

Here is a golden opportunity for the member for Newcastle using one of her many portfolios to show a bit of intestinal fortitude and stand up for what the citizens of Newcastle want. Being Crown Land it is up to the NSW Government to fund any work required to make it safe. If she can achieve a positive result - she can then chalk up one thing that she has done for the city. Then again....it is a fair bit north of Sydney to warrant any action.

Even if they "close" the Bogey Hole people will continue to go there. I made a group on Facebook a few years ago which has around 120 members - people young and old who all have appreciate and have fond memories of time spent there and would not want it to close!! Here is the link: http://www.facebook.com/group.php ?gid=20206035464&ref=nf

Chris I agree with you on the wealth of history and because of a post grad research i looked and was really suprised by what i found. As a result I could not wait to share what I found and put up videos of the old photos transitioned to new onto youtube under my name robertsirasch. Please look and comment as i think it will interest you from your comment? I hope to hear what you think? I really hope everyone can connect well with the past as it is a revelation seeing the order and social meaning that South newcastle beach and adjacent coast had at the turn of the 19th to 20th century and before. I now feel that this history may be a possible way ahead for the heritage of South newcastle, Bogey Hole and K.E Park. maybe "back to the future " in reverse?
