A GUN was not enough for a would-be robber to escape with post office takings after locals turned on him at West Wallsend yesterday.
Police said the bandit, armed with a long-barrelled firearm, stormed the Carrington Street business about 3.30pm yesterday before jumping the counter and threatening staff.
But several customers walked in and began wrestling with the gunman before he broke free and fled in a four-wheel drive.
The suspected getaway vehicle was later found on fire at Seahampton.
