 Harmony on fig row

Harmony on fig row

30 Nov, 2010 03:00 AM
The rustle of leaves was replaced by sweet music at Laman Street, Newcastle last night as groups campaigning to save the street’s fig trees held a concert of sorts.

Maitland-based harmony group the Acapella Singers brought their regular Monday night rehearsal to beneath the street’s tree canopy.

The 14 trees earmarked for the chop have been given a stay of execution, after Newcastle City Council resolved to investigate a ‘‘pull test’’. Members of groups campaigning to save the figs hope the test will show the trees do not pose a public safety risk.

The matter is expected to go back before the council by the end of the year.
