Hunter beaches re-open following shark attack

19 Jan, 2012 09:12 AM
Hunter beaches have re-opened following yesterday's shark attack at Redhead but jet ski and helicopter patrols will continue to scan the sea.

Newcastle City Council says a jet ski will stay on roving patrol today and the Hunter Westpac Rescue Helicopter will sweep over the beaches as it embarks on and returns from missions.

Newcastle and Lake Macquarie city councils will also liaise throughout the day.

Schools of baitfish, which attracted what some observers have said was an unprecedented amount of activity off the region’s beaches yesterday, have moved further out to sea.

A school of hammerheads off Swansea was the only shark activity reported this morning.

Redhead Beach shark attack victim stable

Tattoo artist Glen "Lenny" Folkard is in a stable and lucid condition at John Hunter Hospital following yesterday's shark attack at Redhead Beach.

Mr Folkard was surfing about 4.45pm when he was struck by what was believed to be a bull shark.

The shark took a large chunk from his thigh and his board before dragging him under water, witnesses said.

VIDEO: The Newcastle Herald went to Redhead Beach this morning to find out how people were feeling about the shark attack.

Why on earth are the police involved in this? Are they going to arrest the shark?

In the workplace we are now forced to carry out risk assessments before we start a job, as part of OH&S. Do surfers carry out a risk assessment before they enter the water? I suggest they should start now, after all it is the sharks' natural environment. In northern Australia they have crocodile warning signage, I suppose the Nanny Nation brigade will now want shark warning signage.

@ shrek Maybe a bleeding man on the beach is cause to ring the police to ensure there was no foul play? Or potentially for crowd control?

@Shrek, if the guy was to die as a result of his injuries and the police didn't turn up and collect evidence, there would be no possibility of a coronial inquest.

Shrek - As servants of the community, the police will often turn up when there is a potentially life-threatening emergency, in order to offer assistance if needed.

Sharks are out there people, considering the amount of people using the beaches, an attack here and there is expected. Learn to live with it or don't swim at the beach.

You won't see them....but they see you.

Swimmers and surfers make excellent examples of live bait for bigger, BIG, OR REALLY BIG! sharks looking for an easy meal.
