Hunter fans devour Twilight saga New Moon

19 Nov, 2009 10:12 AM
MORE than 1500 fans devoured the latest instalment of the Twilight saga New Moon last night and in doing broke ticket sale records in the Hunter Region.

While the love affair between stars Robert Pattinson (Edward Cullen) and Kristen Stewart (Bella Swan) made many teenage girls swoon, some fans were happy with one staff member at Greater Union Glendale, one of four Hunter cinemas that screened midnight sessions of New Moon.

Have you seen New Moon? What did you think? Let us know here or comment below.

"We have a bit of an Edward Cullen lookalike on staff here and he caused a stir," cinema spokeswoman Kerryn Tippett said.

"Girls keep coming up to him to get their picture taken and he's happy to play along," she said.

"Our pre-sale tickets are double any film release we've had in one day at our cinema," Ms Tippett said.

New Moon will screen 369 times in Event and Greater Union Cinemas in 24 hours from midnight.

Wheres the article talking about those of us who got dragged to this movie by relatives? Two words Chick Flick.

Sounds like sour grapes to me. Why shouldnt we girls get carried away with the mysterious Edward Cullen or gorgeous Jacob Black? We are confronted with images of unrealistic, airbrushed femme fatales every day and we dont get all self conscious and threatened! I have enjoyed the immense writing talent of Stephanie Meyer and will add that the movies do not in any way give the characters she has created the true credit and reality they so richly deserve. Read the books guys. They really are worth it.

Honey 1, "sour grapes" Denial of the desirability of something after one has found out that it cannot be reached or acquired!! Dont think so in this case. I think you'll find that Tank and Benaud have just seen a cr@p movie, same way i felt when i saw the first one in this series. Wouldnt have gone if knew it was a girly girl movie. Am i right fellas!!???

"We are confronted with images of unrealistic, airbrushed femme fatales every day and we dont get all self conscious and threatened." - I admire your confidence Honey, but this just isn't a fact for most women. And unfortunately, it's increasingly the case for many men. Anyway, I read the four books so far (I say 'so far' as I assume there's no doubt a fifth on the way) but in terms of credit? There's a series you might be familiar with on GO!, the Vampire Diaries (originally by author L.J. Smith). I won't go as far as to say that plagiarism is an issue here, but the *similarities* are there... I'm a guy, and even I don't like the overtly obsequious Bella. Eat Meyer, feminism.

Plenty of people arent convinced by the series, or avoiding the reading series alltogether to escape the risk of being drawn into the cult-like hype surrounding it. But by just seeing the crowd at midnight on wednesday night is proof that so many more people are taken in by the fantasy; and that was only a small fraction of novocastrians with their heart set on seeing the film. I think the series is a lovely way to escape reality and absorb into mindless daydreaming. The first movie I thought was too artsy and left out many good parts of the book; the second movie is much more loyal to the text and directed very well. But face it, its a girly movie, and people who shy away from chick flicks are best left at home.

Go ahead and see this in theaters. Why? Because you’re going to regardless of what a review says. Twilight is a phenomenon that people can’t ignore. But, if you cut through the hype, you’ll see that The Twilight Saga: New Moon is a boring, slow-moving soap opera with a couple mythical creatures thrown in for reasons completely unknown.
