Hunter site chosen for artificial reef

10 Feb, 2011 03:00 AM
THE state government has approved plans for three offshore artificial reefs including one off Blacksmiths Beach.

But the Hunter would need to wait for its reef while the first is trialled off the coast of Sydney for about three years.

The reef would be about 3.6 kilometres off Blacksmiths Beach and the entrance of the Swansea Channel.

A third would be placed off Perkins Beach south of Wollongong.

The NSW Department of Industry and Investment has proposed the reefs to improve offshore recreational fishing opportunities.

An analysis was done to determine where to test the first reef.

The 35-tonne steel structures would take up to six months to build, would be lowered onto the seabed by a crane, and have a lifespan of up to 30 years.

The government said about 30 conditions had been put on the project, including that the department must monitor any impact on threatened species.

this just does not make any sense to me. how much will these things cost? six months to build! its going to be expensive. and the effect is not completely known so it has to be monitored after deployment. more ongoing costs. why bother with this near pointless stuff when people cant get proper treatment in hospitals...... priorities,

Great for fishing but one issue. Waves approach beaches and the contours of the ocean floor direct them into the beach. Hopefully the reef installers are aware of this and will take this into account. Otherwise some popular surfing beaches may have the waves ruined by manmade fiddling with ocean floors. Remember Avoca Point protest over the proposed sinking of a retired Naval vessel. Stayed tuned.

How much is the government planning on spending for these "Recreational" things? Whilst I agree that we need to have things to do to relax, I think the money could be spent on more appropriate things............... like perhaps helping out flood, cyclone & fire devestated areas........................

Just a thought.

Interesting these things are going on the ocean floor off a popular surfing beach. During the Cyclone Yasi updates they said the coral on the reef slowed down the ocean surge does that mean this reef will slow down the waves and they will die off before they get close to shore?
