Hunter Street Mall lights up for markets

05 Dec, 2009 04:00 AM
NEWCASTLE Mall came alive last night for the first of a series of night markets.

As dusk settled over the city hundreds of people roamed through the Red Lantern night markets as the mall was illuminated with Christmas displays and street performers.

It was the first of three Friday night markets planned for December in the newly named Hunter Street Outlets precinct.

Christmas art installations unveiled last night include two oversized motion-activated Christmas gifts that light up and play Christmas carols when approached.

"Both Livesites and the Newcastle City Centre Committee have greatly contributed to the Gifts to the City and generally in bringing Christmas back to the city," Hunter Street Outlets spokesperson Dwight Hodgetts said.

Renew Newcastle venues were trading late and teeming with people, including the Market Square site for the graduating graphic design students' Momentum Project.

The event was deemed a success by shoppers, stallholders and shopkeepers, with all agreeing the mall had finally found its missing ingredient, people.

Congratulations to those who organized this event. It was a wonderful evening and we were delighted with the array of unique hand made items on sale. The atmosphere was fantastic with African rhythms and a great vibe. WHY WERE all of the city car parks closed??? It seems that the council needs a wake up call. Local Govt should be supporting these initiatives rather than hindering the organizers.

These are the types of events that will revitalise the city NOT ripping out the railway

Good to see, when the Mall was first built it was a known entertainment precinct on weekend shopping, why do you think there is a stage in the mall itself directly under the perdestrian overpass to get to Queens Wharf itself. Time to bring back the Allan Ward Show Band as well as other known entertainers over the malls whole existance such as Local Brass Bands, Newcastle PCYC Brass band and even the Marching Koalas utilised the mall in the begining. It was the indicator of progress and attracted many people. Also the mall was the main attraction area for the Mattara march as the Mattara was a Newcastle City event, that promoted the City as the attraction for the festival within the CBD, not the outskirts as it is these days since it left Civic Park.

Look, I told you that ripping out the rail would bring people back to the centre......... what d'u mean.......the rail hasn't gone!!?! But there are people there!? How can there be people there if the rail is still there? This can't be right, we've always been told the rail is standing in the way of people wanting to come into the CBD..... Whats gone wrong????

I went to the markets. They were better than expected. The best part? Being able to catch the train to and from the mall.

Congrats to the organisers of this market. We thought it was great to get this happening in the city and were impressed with how good it was - there was some new stalls with stuff I haven't seen in Newy markets before. We are definitely going back for the next 2 weeks. Yummy food too!

You can tell from the light patterns on the crowd that this is a fake picture of a crowd in Hunter Street. How is this propaganda journalism?
