Hunter women inspiration for art exhibition

10 Mar, 2011 03:00 AM
AN opening tonight at student gallery Watt Space features six inspirational women on the Newcastle arts scene.

Rebecca Noel Holmes's exhibition String of Sirens captures some of the women she worked with while completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Newcastle.

"They're all women I've had some kind of involvement with over the last three years," she said.

"They've influenced my work, or I've been inspired by them in some way."

The women featured are Renew Newcastle co-ordinator Marni Jackson, artists Kate Parker, Taryn Raffan, Trine Deans and Fiona Lee, and Watt Space director Anne McLaughlin.

"They're really quite active in this community, and I look at the work they do, and their involvement in this community, and it really inspires me to be involved and create more work," the 23-year-old said.

Ms Holmes says tonight's opening will be the first time many have seen the works.

"It's exciting, because all the subjects, and a lot of their family members will be here," she said.
