Impressive 'tornado' snapped off Stockton beach

14 Feb, 2012 05:52 AM
A LARGE waterspout forming off the ocean and travelling along the coast towards Stockton beach amazed many residents last night.

About 7.45pm the Newcastle Herald received calls from excited residents who captured the spectacular sight.

Elliot Swift, 16, was on his balcony in Merewether when he noticed the waterspout emerge over Christ Church Cathedral.

‘‘It travelled to the left and then retracted into space, it probably lasted about five to six minutes,’’ he said.

Graham Bird, of The Hill, said it appeared to hover across Stockton.

‘‘You could see it stirring up water and then see it stirring up the sand along the beach,’’ he said.

Weatherwatch chief meteorologist Anthony Cornelius said it was possible the waterspout was, in fact, a tornado: ‘‘They’re very similar, and technically a waterspout is a tornado.’’

HEY H.A ! In the ocean its a waterspout - but when it reaches land -what is it then?"

but a simple search reveals the following definition -

""waterspout n. A tornado or lesser whirlwind occurring over water and resulting in a funnel-shaped whirling column of air and spray.""

What I wonder is how many have done that before locally?

Was it going clock wise or anti clockwise?

Would it have brought down a fig vine?

It was travelling anti-clockwise.

@ Stockton_Resident .. an interesting observation ! Looks like the earth must have tilted on its' axis which may explain some of the hysteria regarding rising sea levels.

thinkitthrough - yes, I agree, people should think it through.

Where is all the water from glaciers melting throughout the world going to go?

Down some drain in the center of the ocean?

Will some benevolent deity magically transport it back to Greenland- or up to the tops of the mountains again?

I'm sure the residents of Vanuatu and the Maldives wish that were so...

The developers of course don't care- they'll have already made their cash and run off, leaving others to hold the bag and foot the bills.
