Investigation into shark bite photo leak

25 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
HUNTER New England Health is investigating how a grisly hospital photograph of a shark attack victim was released widely on the internet.

The photo purportedly shows Glen ‘‘Lenny’’ Folkard being treated at John Hunter Hospital.

Mr Folkard, 44, was bitten by a shark while surfing at Redhead Beach last Wednesday afternoon.

T he photo, which spread online after being posted on Facebook on Friday, shows hospital staff tending to a patient with a chunk of flesh loosely attached to his right buttocks and thigh. Surrounding skin appears shredded by what could be shark teeth. The Newcastle Herald has chosen to show only part of the image.

A Hunter New England spokesman initially said the photo was of Mr Folkard and said it may have been uploaded by the victim’s friends.

In response to a further Herald inquiry, a spokeswoman said the image was taken at the John Hunter but declined to identify the patient.

The former said the photo was ‘‘not released’’ by hospital staff and the latter said it was ‘‘not taken’’ by staff.

‘‘Sometimes staff members do take photos for medical purposes but that’s only with the consent of the patient,’’ the spokeswoman said.

The NSW Ambulance Service said paramedics were not responsible.

So what's the story here? Is Hunter Health just trying to cover there own arse after somebody released a photo of Lenny's somewhat gnarled one? It was quite graphic, too, by the way.

I have seen it, it was pretty gruesome, but very good for the kids to see what could happen if you're not careful and listen to the warnings and swim between the flags.

I think the whole system needs looking at. Anyone can access your personal records. Needs to be like the police force.

Something fishy going on with this.

It looks like this photograph was taken in the preparation room prior to being taken to the operation theatre which is a restricted area to staff ...

Goes to show how serious the bite was, while quite graphic the damage was extensive and was quite a reality check on the seriousness of that bite. Puts to shame the old saying 'wouldn't shout if a shark bit him" well they would have heard me in China.

@ Kat, Sharks will still swim between the flags. Flags are put up so it can indicate to humans the safest part of the beach to swim, flags do not stop sharks.

@Kat, hahaha you think sharks are not allowed to venture in between the flags????

I too saw this photo do the rounds of FB. It was passed on like chinese whispers. It was pretty nasty to see, but made me feel more for Lenny, whom I know as a being a former client of his.

There were a few whingers commenting on FB that it was to gruesome to show...well why look then?

I mainly feel for Lenny and his family's privacy....maybe they did not want the world to see this pic, just close friends and family? But something does smell fishy (pardon the pun) about its release details.

Anyway, hope all is good Lenny and you recover soon, mate!

Lord help us if there are people in the community that think it is safe to swim between the flags! I am sure sharks cannot read and if they did the opportunity of a free feed would be too great to resist.
