Jetstar unveils extra flights to Melbourne and Gold Coast

10 Dec, 2009 04:00 AM
IN a vote of confidence for the Hunter's once-troubled air travel market, budget carrier Jetstar will announce today 14 extra flights a week to and from Newcastle.

Two-thirds of passengers in and out of Newcastle Airport will fly Jetstar when the extra flights start next March and Melbourne and Gold Coast routes will be especially bolstered.

Flights between Newcastle and Melbourne will increase from twice to three times daily on March 7, and Novocastrians can get to the Gold Coast twice a day from July.

"We've been the predominant airline into Newcastle, and it's been a very important market for us," Jetstar corporate relations head Simon Westaway said.

"The airport is very well managed and we see an important future there."

Flight options for Newcastle were thrown into a tailspin eight years ago by the collapse of regional carrier Impulse Airlines.

Qantas bought what was left of Impulse in 2001, built sister carrier Jetstar from that base and launched the airline in 2004.

Today's announcement showed Jetstar was expanding the Newcastle base it inherited from Impulse, Mr Westaway said.

He predicted Hunter residents' increased access to Melbourne would make it easier to conduct business, while the extra travel between Newcastle and Gold Coast could boost the tourism sectors of both.

The carrier introduced a third daily flight to and from the southern capital in 2008, but backed away as the global financial crisis eroded holiday budgets.

Today's announcement coincides with 700,000 new seats nationally, a move that Jetstar expects will to boost its 8.1 million 2009 domestic ticket sales by 7 per cent.

All we need now is a decent airport near the population centre in Lake Macquarie.

a look toward a regular service to both adelaide and perth would have patronage as well.

This is great news for Newcastle travellers. Thanks Jetstar for your vote of confidence in Newcastle and hope that you continue to provide affordable travel for the millions that have already used your Newcastle services. Into the future I hope you can extend your Newcastle routes to include Tasmania, Adelaide and New Zealand.

Great news Jetstar. This will help promote Newcastle airport and the area generally. The next step is to look at additional destinations eg Cairns, Perth and who knows, in the future maybe some overseas destinations such as Thailand, Hong Kong etc. I have travelled plenty of times from Newcastle airport, and find it so much more convenient and inviting than having to fight the Sydney traffic to get to Kingsford Smith.

why on earth is it necessary to even mention Impulse, and describe the mair travel market as "once troubled"? Can't you handle a good news story?? What happened with impulse is ancient history! The airport (and the region) has been booming for years, and continues to do so. If you have to be negative, maybe move to another city.

I'll add my voice calling for flights to Perth, Adelaide, Cairns and NZ - and maybe one day to SE Asia also. To James - I don't think that Lake Macquarie will ever attract an airport when there is such a good facility at Williamtown only 40 minutes away. What we do need is a rail link between the Airport and Newcastle/Lake Macquarie.

This is great news for Newcastle and the Hunter. I travel the Newcastle/Brisbane route regularly and it is always full. Newcastle Airport is fast expanding. The future is indeed looking bright.

Thanks, Jetstar! Our company means frequent visits to Melbourne and at the moment, we don't have much choice - up at the crack of dawn and back home in the middle of the night. Some extra options will make a huge difference to us.

"Extra" flights to Melbourne?? As little as two months ago Jetstar had three flights a day from Newcastle to Melbourne before they cut back to two, now they are claiming to be adding extra flights? How about "Jetstar return normal service" as a headline instead??

@James and good airport deserves more, you mean reopen Belmont airport? But I really can't see the logic in operating the big 200 seat Airbus jets only 2-3 times per day. A better service would be smaller (80-100 seat) but more frequent (5-6 times per day) regional jets on short haul to Brisbane, Gold Coast, Canberra, Adelaide and Melbourne, and keep the bigger jets for longer haul to Perth, Darwin, Cairns and NZ. Regional jets are also quieter and use less fuel.
