Jobs estimates down for Tillegra dam

28 Sep, 2009 12:38 PM
STATE Government bureaucrats altered a draft copy of this year's budget speech to significantly revise down the number of jobs Tillegra Dam was expected create.

The draft copy, which the NSW Coalition obtained through freedom of information laws, shows the speech initially said: "Look at Tillegra Dam a $406 million investment" and "It will create 1849 construction jobs." Handwritten notes on the draft copy indicated that the $406 million figure should be revised to $477 million.

The reference to creating 1849 jobs was revised to read "support 280 jobs". Treasurer Eric Roozendaal used the revised figures in this year's budget speech.

Shadow minister for natural resource management Katrina Hodgkinson said the draft speech showed that the figure of 1850 jobs was fundamentally incorrect.

"Minister Costa's [water minister Phil Costa] adherence to the mirage of Tillegra Dam job creation shows that he is desperately trying to defend the indefensible dam by continuing to pedal unsustainable and incorrect information," she said.

"If Tillegra Dam is to create almost 2000, jobs I challenge the Minister to publicly release the documentation supporting his claims."

A summary brochure released as part of the Tillegra Dam environmental assessment report says the dam will result in the "creation of 280 direct jobs and around 1850 other jobs across the region."

No Tillegra Dam spokeswoman Sally Corbett said more sustainable employment would flow to the region from 90 farms and their staff if the dam was not built.

I just hope that the NSW Labor party do not do anything with the Tillegra Dam until after the next election. That way sanity will see the dam dropped with the election of the Liberals at the next election.

How do we stop the lies and the madness before these arrogant "public servants" build this dam - with our money?

Weapons Of Mass Construction - employment figures. What a new way of doing business based on that astute GWBush set of rules - or were they those of Joseph Goebbles. Oops sorry it wasnt 1849 jobs - that was a typing error, it was actually 280 construction jobs. Oh there's the other 1850 jobs that may flow on - but how and how long for?

As if the announcement of the Dam wasn't designed to make NSW Labor look good for swinging voters - and then the assisting job propaganda to go with it!! What about all the damage to the local roads, done by getting all the earthmoving trucks to the construction site. Who's going to pay for that? Not me if I get a vote in it. LABOR MUST GO!!

I'd like to hear the Mayor of Dungog's view of this whole proposal. Most of his constituents appear to be against it.

This is a stupid and costly politgical farce. Surely rate payers money can be wasted on fighting crime and improving our health system, yeah?

One should not be surprised with such a revealation. It has been this way from day one, 13 November 2006. There will be further bombshells. Why do you think Hunter Water and the Rees Govt have been so secretive over the release of information? The very first FOI conducted in February 2007 of Hunter Water's files was so censored, it puts Hitler's and Stalin's propoganda machines of the 1930's and 1940's to shame.
