Lake shark mystery solved

09 Feb, 2012 04:45 PM
THE four-metre tiger shark found in Lake Macquarie was caught 50kilometres offshore during the weekend’s game fishing competition.

Lake Macquarie Game Fishing Club president Paul Hogg confirmed the 398kilogram fish was weighed at Swansea about midnight on Saturday.

The crew who caught it were towing it back out through Swansea channel for disposal when the boat’s tow rope broke.

Should anglers be able to catch sharks in fishing competitions? Vote in our online poll today.

‘‘It was in deep water and it sunk immediately,’’ Mr Hogg said.

The current carried the shark back into the channel.

Huon Oliver and Bryan Passmore discovered it on the north-west side of Swansea bridge on Sunday.

Mr Hogg admitted the crew should have advised the organisers that they had lost the shark and is satisfied it was a mistake.

if the fish is not going to be used/eaten then it should not be allowed to be weighed in. what a waste of a valuable resource. fisher persons like this are what give the greenies power to fight against fishing. its time to change the way game fishing comps are run.

Did they admit that the Shark was killed for Human entertainment?

How can you believe that since the shark sank in deep water it would not return. I bet it was probably dumped at the head of the channel given the time at night. The fast moving tides did the rest.

Time for a clean out on the rules governing 'competitions'.

If humans are allowed to kill sharks for purely entertainment purposes, then how do you justify hunting sharks that are attacking humans for survival purposes... in their own territory?

If this is allowed, then why not bring back gladiators?

As a recreational fisherman, I am appalled that this animal was killed and then dumped after the fish was weighed. It is an irresponsible act that makes no sense - as a recreational fisherman I make sure that what I catch is the legal size and then I only take what I know I will eat.
