Laman Street closed due to strong wind

20 Sep, 2011 01:26 PM
STRONG wind has prompted the evacuation of Laman Street and the closure of the Newcastle Art Gallery and Newcastle Library.

A ‘‘total exclusion zone’’ is now in place around the controversial fig trees.

Newcastle City Council liveable city director Frank Cordingley said the measures were put in place about 1pm when winds were measured in excess of 50 kilometres an hour.

At the same time, staff members detected smoke in the art gallery, and several NSW Fire Brigade crews arrived in the street to investigate.

This is the first time the extreme risk mitigation measures have been enforced, and patrons and pedestrians expressed their frustration in Laman Street after having been evacuated or denied entry.

The measures have been insisted upon by the council’s insurer, Statewide Mutual.

Statewide had said it would withdraw insurance coverage on August 31, but later agreed to extend that coverage until the end of October on the basis that the council was investigating a ‘‘third-party determination’’ of its risk assessments.

Is Stewart Avenue and Maitland Rd at Islington still open?

NCC are a pack of drama queens. The figs didn't fall down in the June 2007 storms so they won't fall down in this slight breeze.

Exactly, the trees should go, the risk is too high. How many of the "save the figs" supporters would be happy to camp under the tres in the current situation?

SOF are paying all costs associated with the evacuations?

So why aren't Union and Parry Streets also closed, as these same fig trees grow around No1 Sportsground?

So we cant even use the street or facilities. Thanks, to those who refuse to fix the problem.

Let's close down all the other streets in Newcastle that have fig trees, and evacuate all the buildings in those streets too. We could end up having most of Newcastle closed down and blocked off .... but then what if a different kind of tree blows down? There were lots of twigs and small branches down in Carnley Avenue this afternoon. Should we close it too? Isn't this just getting too ridiculous for words? People take risks with trees every day, but we don't normally close the streets just in case. This has become an absurd joke!

Safety First!

If these vines had been improperly pruned over past decades there would not have been such danger.

Of course, the road would be blocked by hundreds of new trunks, built from aerial roots allowed to grow as the trees want.

What fools planted this species of fig in the first place?? What possessed them? Surely they would have known that these vines would have thrown aerial roots and blocked the road!!
