Lawyers 'left out' of new courthouse talks

23 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
NEWCASTLE’S legal community was ‘‘left out’’ of consultation on the city’s new $94million courthouse, Newcastle Bar Association president Peter Harper said yesterday.

Mr Harper released a statement saying the Bar Association had raised a number of concerns with the Department of Attorney-General and Justice at a stakeholders meeting in October last year.

A development application has been lodged, but no one from the legal community has seen detailed plans.

‘‘We are concerned that a [development application] has been submitted in the absence of any further consultation,’’ Mr Harper said.

‘‘It appears that having voiced our concern, we have now been left out of the consultative process. At face value, there appears to be a complete lack of community consultation.’’

At the meeting in October, Mr Harper said members of the legal community ‘‘unanimously’’ raised concern about site selection and a lack of available space for justice groups like legal aid and prosecutors.

‘‘The [department] then indicated that we would be invited to another meeting as stakeholders once the plans were drawn,’’ Mr Harper said.

A spokesman for Attorney-General Greg Smith said yesterday internal planning in individual spaces within the court complex had not been finalised.

‘‘There is also work to do on the design to ensure we have the right spaces to meet the needs of the court and court users,’’ the spokesman said.

‘‘There will be ongoing consultation about this and the bar will be included in this process.’’

Newcastle MP Tim Owen said he made representations to Mr Smith on behalf of the legal community.

A lack of parking at the new courthouse has also created concern among community members. The current courthouse does not provide public parking, but Newcastle City Council modelling shows the Civic precinct nearing capacity.

That's pretty typical everywhere. They never ask the actual workers, what is logical for a big site.

Only the Workers have the real insight into the requirements for them to make a site work.

People in their "ivory towers" continue to make Dud decisions - because they have their heads in the clouds - and all those in power marvel at the "splendour" of something they know absolutley nothing about.

I'm sure all the workers will agree with me!

This appears to be an ill thought through development that suits no one except the politicians.

Moving the court house from one spot to another is just a deck chair shuffling exercise that will have no net gain for the city.

Time to find a bit more cash from Macquarie St, restore and expand the current court house, which is near the police station has adequate parking and close to lawyers offices and is a building befitting the regions history and significance.

Build the proposed court house BUT move a govt department from Sydney into it to create a net gain for the city

Parking will be a major issue. The Civic area is already overflowing and this court complex is being built on existing car parks - stupid stupid stupid.

The State 2021 plan talks about openness, transparancy and the community making decisions.

To spend $94m on a building that consumes one of the most valuable sites in the CBD for lower economic activity and lower employment than the existing Court site is deplorable.

This project must be canned and the $94m spent to rebuild and expand the Church St Court facilities.

I put my support behind Mr Owen thinking he and the Liberals would move the place forward. After 12 months the place has been moved further backwards.

Why do Novocastrians think they have the right to be heard on every development project? Nothing gets done here because there is such an overinflated sense of entitlement to ‘be heard’. The constant nattering is destroying our city.

It appears as though this new Courthouse does not any more courts than the current one and absolutely no space in the surrounding area for the legal community and NO PARKING. I can see the wheels of justice grinding to a halt with the court having to wait for legal aid or prosecutors to arrive as if they remain in their current offices they will have to get to the court during the day. Also the East End of Newcastle, if they all tried to move elsewhere will become deserted and I dread what will happen to it e.g. The Post Office area, not to mention the Hotel and the surrounding cafe's/shops.

Parking is the biggest concern here. A lot of people use the Court facility and where on earth are they going to park in a choked up Civic area. Should be built out of the CBD where parking can be implicated on a bigger block.

The lack of parking is a massive concern. I work very close to where the proposed new courts will be located, & parking is already ridiculously limited. To make things worse, this development is even incorporating the Clarendon carpark! There are plenty of other sites around Newcastle that could be used for the Court, with space to grow & to accommodate parking & further legal facilities. I suspect that this development could be outgrown very quickly, and then what? In a couple of years they’ll be off finding a new, larger site - and then there'll be another empty building in Hunter Street.
