Legal advice on Cessnock panel appointment

30 Aug, 2010 05:00 AM
CESSNOCK councillor James Ryan wants to obtain legal advice on whether Planning Minister Tony Kelly acted in a "reasonable and lawful" manner in appointing a planning panel to Cessnock City Council.

Cr Ryan will ask councillors at a meeting on Wednesday night to support his notice of motion to obtain legal opinion and that the legal advice and a covering report from the general manager be presented to councillors as soon as possible.

Cr Ryan said a minister was obliged to take into account any report or investigation by the Department of Local Government.

Keep digging. The truth is slowly emerging about planning goings on and political donations in this region.

good call. cr Ryan. ratepayers are left bewildered. all we have seen is improvements in service since this new council was democratically elected. i even went into mr hickeys office last month to tell him how disapointed i was with his stand against our council. he was in sydney, so i left a message with staff. obviously that was never taken into account in the collation of complaints from constituents that came across his desk!

The State Govt is very learned in what they are able to get away with, without it constituting corruption. After 17 years in power, all levels of Government and govt departments are top heavy with Labor aligned and installed bosses. It would be very hard to find a non Labor biased panel to oversee anything in NSW - Let the elected who have no conflict of interest make decisions - Cessnock City Councillors

Since when has this NSW Labor government worried about being lawful? They deserve to lose Cessnock seat (again).

I don't understand how or why they appointed this management group. Seems a bit odd to me in view of the recent controversy over land zoning (which I don't understand either). more background please.
