Lord mayor's casting vote wins figs stay of execution

13 Sep, 2011 09:53 PM
Lord mayor John Tate used his casting vote tonight to win another stay of execution for the Laman Street fig trees.

Newcastle City Council voted six-six to have the risk of the trees independently assessed.

A packed public gallery erupted when the result was announced at 9.48pm.

For full report, see tomorrow's Newcastle Herald.

Can we have it publicly stated from ALL parties (the council, save our trees and the insurers) that after this independent assessment they will abide by THAT judgement???

But more importantly...will any of the insurance companies even care about this assessment? Or have they already made the choice not to cover the trees, so this is essentially a waste of time??

Well it is now time for the full facts to be placed on public exhibition including all the evidence and reports council officers have been using.

It is also important that the details of how the costs todate have been funded and how the cost of removal is to be financed.

I believe this is a moronic act by our Lord Mayor.

These SaveOurFigs people need to be stopped.

You cannot allow a fringe group to hold the city of Newcastle hostage.

This is great news for the 4 twitter supporters of SOF.

Sad news for Newcastle and sanity.

Who is going to do the independent assessment and who will select the assessor? Will the selection itself become another prolonged debacle with opposing sides trying to influence the outcome? How much will it cost ratepayers? Why should a further opinion be any more credible than those already considered? What if the result is exactly the same as in 2009 with a recommendation the trees should go? I hope all ratepayers remember the actions of this Council and the Lord Mayor at the next election.

Here we go again. More of our money down the drain. Just cut them down and be done with it.

Yet another waste of money!!!... And what will be the next strategy when these assessments come to the same conclusion?!! We will lose our Art Gallery and Public Library over this!!

Lord mayor John Tate used his casting vote . Well maybe he can use his casting vote to stop the rates from going up.

I dont think the rate payers should have to pay for this ongoing saga. So can anyone tell me who is going to pay for this if this keeps going for another 2 years. SOF cannot keep putting their hand in the pocket. as where the money comes from could be the community so if NCC staff keep doing this we will be paying or putting our bit in there as well.

increase or reduce the number of councillors to an odd number.

That should over come voting dead locks.

Iam going to make the trip into Newcastle just to see these figs for myself.

Sounds like the council has made a wise decision and listened to the community. No sense in chopping down perfectly good trees in this time of global warming.
