Lost rail line remembered

10 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
IT might have been 11.30 at night, but 20 years ago today the last train ever on the Toronto to Fassifern rail line was packed.

Hundreds took the journey on the 100-year-old line to say goodbye.

"It was a very popular service and locals objected to the closure, so a lot of people had travelled back and forwards free of charge on the final day, and they stayed right to the end to make the final trip," Lake Macquarie and District Historical Society secretary Max Pengilley said.

On March 10, 1990 it was the end of an era when the train pulled into Fassifern for the final time.

The Excelsior Company ran the first tram on the 4.4 kilometre route on March 7, 1891.

At one time a draft horse was used to pull a 14-passenger trolley on the weekday service, but the combination didn't last very long after male passengers were occasionally asked to get out and help the horse cope with the steeper grades.

The NSW Government took over the line in 1910 and the regular Newcastle to Toronto rail service was launched on May 28, 1911.

Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper said he was pleased that the line was retained in public ownership.

"While a regular service is certainly not in the foreseeable future, we're denying future generations the opportunity of a rail option if we don't retain these corridors in public ownership," Cr Piper said.

There should be lessons learnt from the closure of thie Toronto to Fassifern line in relation to the Newcastle line, we were promised the earth by the people wanting the line cut and at the end of the day, the bus service never ever came close to living up to the promises. We were better off with the train.

Could private enterprise lease the line, it would be an asset to the people of Toronto to run to Fassifern.

I remember a public meeting at Toronto RSL when then local ALP candidate Jeff Hunter spoke and promised those in attendance that when the ALP was returned to government, the Toronto rail line would reopen. Jeff had nearly 16 years from May 1991 to March 2007 to get our trains back on the line. It must have just slipped his mind - probably didn't fit the ALP policy on public transport.

Those that want to cut the Newcastle line should examine the fantastic alternative transport that was provided to replace rail! lol

what an asset that travel option was. recall the old red rattler as hug the line heading to fassi?.while it is great presently to have a cycleway /pathway, the abandoned landcare efforts have left the track in places quite hazardous.

The line should be re-opened with regular light rail services. They should do the same with Belmont, Cessnock and Wallsend as well as re-establishing tram services. It was short sighted to close those services in the first place. Re-opening them is essential as Greater Newcastle is growing at a rate of 6500 residents and several thousand cars per year. At that rate the population will be about 3/4 million in 3 decades and will hit the 1 million mark perhaps in the 6th or 7th decade of this century. How can we afford not to be building basic public transport infrastructure to service that expanding population? But of course, this is NSW where nothing is invested outside of the Sydney basin.

The death knell really was when the state govt bypassed this line in the electrification scheme in the 1980's. It would still be viable today in my opinion if trains ran direct from Newcastle to Toronto.

A lesson here for the crazies who want to remove the heavy rail into Newcastle. Yet again a great tourist opportunity was lost for Toronto. Rail to Fassifern, steam tram to the cafe's and the scenic pub at Toronto. and then home again by rail. .

This line should be reinstated imediatly. the demand is there and its a key connection point at western Lake Macquarie.
