Low-carbon jobs opportunity, Newcastle forum told

28 Oct, 2009 03:00 AM
A LOW-CARBON economy would create jobs, not destroy them, a climate-change forum in Newcastle heard yesterday.

The Southern Cross Climate Coalition of union, welfare and environmental groups is holding forums in regional Australia to counter what it calls a scare campaign by employers leading up to next month's Copenhagen climate summit.

At Newcastle Trades Hall Council yesterday, ACTU president Sharan Burrow, Australian Conservation Foundation executive director Don Henry, Australian Council of Social Security chief executive Clare Martin and Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union mining president Tony Maher addressed about 100 people on the pitfalls of the climate debate.

"We need to be leaders, not laggards," Mr Henry said of Australia's role in the debate.

The group said the Hunter needed a regional plan to ensure its industries won a good share of the work that would flow from climate change.

Trades hall secretary Gary Kennedy said the Illawarra had a regional policy to encourage jobs and the Hunter had to follow suit.

Mr Maher said it was "not a matter of cutting back on consumption and production that's not on the agenda".

He said calling the new jobs "green jobs" confused the issue, because the low-carbon economy would still look a lot like the existing economy, only with different forms of energy.

Australia needed a carbon-trading scheme as soon as possible, as it would give business the certainty to invest in building low-carbon technology.

The bigger the lie, the easier it is to sell to a gullible public.

"Green jobs" is code for mass unemployment in the industries that keep our economy strong. The greenies will not be happy until we go back to subsistence farming and living in mud huts! I am getting sick of this climate change religion.

Are Sharan, Don, Clare Tony and their supporters trustees of any union superannuation funds? ......... If so, I recommend they put their money where their mouths are, and commit, say, $200 million to a Hunter Green Investment Fund, with an easy application process and generous financial return timeframe, to enable these schemes to bear the fruit. .... the scheme will need at least $100 million devoted to a nuclear power station, which can be sited at a block of ground to their choosing, to supply energy at times when the wind farms aren't working. Will this happen??? Yeah, when pigs fly, which is why I and 229,000 other Novocastrians didn't turn up to yesterday's talkfest!!! Th union superfunds are invested in companies that support companies who import cheap crap from Chinese firms who don't give a toss about the environment, or workers conditions, or human rights. So get down from the pedestals and get real. It rubbishy diversions like this that are killing manufacturing industry in this country.

A low carbon economy will look like the existing economy. Yeah, right, maybe like Zimbabwe's existing economy.

Who gets all the money from the costs of global change, governments say we have to pay for carbon use, we already pay for electricity. By not using power won't save a cent, the power stations still have to burn coal and you cannot store electricity for later use. Plase explain or we will all be in mud huts growing our own veges, not to mention the methane caused by human and animal bloat, gas, fart. Like I said 2 days ago get rid of the animals, become canibals and then we won't have to worry, the climate will look after itself

whats wrong with mudbrick buildings? i hear they r incredibly sustainable and long lasting, cool in summer, warm in winter and have also a higher fire resistance.

These people (Sharon Burrow and Tony Maher) have really strong scientific credentials. As if they will go against Mr Kevin Rudd and Labour Party heavy weights such as Penny Wong in such a debate! Get real. I will believe all the "Green Jobs" when I see one! This ETS is just another tax we don't need. We will be uncompetative in a world market and countries like Indonesia with its very dirty coal (high sulphur and trace Element nasties) will step into the breach when we become to expensive to compete as they will not be bringing in any ETS or stop cutting down their forrests which take up Cabon Dioxide. Unemployment here we come!

Yes enviro realist, these green religion lunatics are dangerous to all of us.

All it takes is one "Global Warming" story to appear and all the "Flat Earthers" come out of the woodwork crying crocodile tears about "jobs". Perhaps they should look at how many jobs the coal companies have shed over the last 30 years... and look at the mess they've made of our beautiful valley. You want base load green power? Build a solar-thermal plant. It's not that hard and the technology was developed here in Australia (currently being implemented overseas). Of course the flat earthers will still be complaining about "GW religion" and "greenies" when they are up to their necks in water.
