Malone criticises fellow bishops on abuse silence

01 Aug, 2009 04:00 AM
MAITLAND-Newcastle Catholic Bishop Michael Malone has marked the first anniversary of the Papal apology to Australian victims of pedophile priests by criticising his fellow bishops for continuing the silence about sexual abuse in the church.

The church in Australia was compromised by the failure of bishops to take "ownership" of the issue, as directed by Pope Benedict XVI during his historic World Youth Day apology in Sydney.

"I think that a lot of my colleagues would not think that the church is compromised," the bishop said.

"How could you not think that the whole purpose of the church is kind of in question when all this stuff has happened and it hasn't sort of been responded to with greater ownership by all of us."

He expressed frustration with the "black hole" of silence into which his comments to other bishops about sexual abuse seemed to fall.

He had raised the issue at the two Australian Bishops Conference meetings that have been held since World Youth Day in July last year.

But the response was silence, he said.

"There wasn't any response in the main room when I said it," he said.

The bishop said he was willing and probably would raise the issue more directly at future bishops' conferences, where he would remind other bishops that "the Pope's made it very clear we have to be proactive about this".

At last someone with the courage & conviction to speak out against their peers. The Catholic Church has lost so much credibility over this. Most thinking people would associate complacency to pedophilia as akin to accessory requiring the same condemnation and criminal conviction. I urge all clergy of whatever faith to come forward and clear their conscious. Expose what they know and set the slate clean once and for all. Until then only Bishop Michael Malone can hold his head high and deserve respect. He certainly now has mine.

The church has been compromised in every major country around the world. The only people who seem unaware of that fact are the bishops. Moreover, it appears the the Australian Bishops' Conference is just a mirror image of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops with their "Do as I say not as I do mentality." By and large they are of the opinion that THE PROBLEM IS OVER which is far from the truth. The abuse of children is just one area of sexual abuse and there is much that remains to be exposed. I hear from people who were sexually abused on a daily basis, not just from here in the U.S. but from victim/survivors and their families in Canada, Ireland and Australia. I have heard from women religious who have been raped by priests in the U.S. as well as from mission areas. I believe there should be an investigation by the Holy See of the actions of bishops, past and present. The few bishops who have the character and integrity to speak up should demand such action.

Most will not speak up because they will be sidelined on the church's fast track upward. Speaking such truths will certainly not be rewarded with a red hat! Until and unless the bishops start behaving as they should their credibility and authority, and the church's in general, will continue to dissipate. But remember too, that other then saying how concerned he was or is about the sexual abuse of thousands of children, has Pope Benedict really done anything concrete? Has he removed from the clerical state those bishops around the world who are known sexual predators? Not to my knowledge. He has forced them to retire without publicly naming them as sexual predators. Most ordinary Catholics find that very disturbing, distasteful and disingenuous.

He seems to forget that when you stir the embers of a fire, it can become a roaring inferno - take a tablet and get on with it!

The bishops' silence is a scream, a shout of defiance to the Truth. Thank you, Bishop Michael for being the "voice crying in the wilderness". It will be heard one day.

Well and good for Bishop Malone to speak out...now remove those charged with offences from their parishes pending proof of innocence. Too many loyal parishioners are blindly ignoring what has been happening under their noses for years and thereby supporting the power these abusers hold over people.

Congrats to Bishop Michael Malone! Here in the USA, we are suffering in tearful anxiety for someone among the hierarchy to show his sort of courage. In the meantime, hundreds of thousands of Catholics are understandably and appropriately following their consciences and leaving this mockery of a Catholic church that insolently continues to call itself Christian. The Spirit is leading the People of God in this spiritual revolution. This worldwide reform will purify the Catholic Church so that it can once again be called Christian. God bless.
