UNIQUE and colourful insights into the character of a wheelchair-bound Newcastle High student have been captured by her peers in a new art exhibition.
Called A different perspective, it is one of the Renew Newcastle projects filling empty shopfronts around Hunter Street Mall.
More than 100 works by 25 year 10 and 11 students dot the walls of display, which was officially opened last night.
Art teacher David Pickard said students were asked to capture year 8 student Claire Bertolli, who is confined to a wheelchair.
"They didn't really know how astute she was, how articulate, until we had her in class," he said.
Madeleine Sharman used a rainbow of colours to illustrate Claire's many layers.
"It's so people look beyond the wheelchair," she said.
Emma Lunn painted Claire without her wheelchair.
"I tired to focus on her as a person completely forgetting about her disability," she said.
The works are on display upstairs in Market Square in the Hunter Street mall.
Hours are Wednesday to Saturday between 11am and 4pm, and 8pm on Thursdays, until July 2.
