Marmong Point Marina to become one of state's largest

27 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
MARMONG Point Marina will become one of the largest marinas in the state, when the NSW Government today approves its expansion from 160 to 245 berths.

Assistant Planning Minister Barbara Perry will approve the $4 million project, which includes a 170-metre public boardwalk.

Ms Perry said the project would meet increasing demand for boat storage on Lake Macquarie.

"This approval will consolidate an important recreation and tourism facility on Lake Macquarie, bringing economic benefits," Ms Perry said.

Marmong Point Marina owner Les Binkin said 85 new berths would be built and 75 of the existing 160 berths replaced.

Mr Binkin said construction would begin within a month.

"This will be a great asset for Lake Macquarie," Mr Binkin said.

"I've put my heart and soul into this project and it's taken a long time to gain approval, so I'm satisfied we can move forward and build it."

The redevelopment will create 25 construction jobs.

It includes a public sewer pump-out system and a 30-metre-wide navigation channel to allow safe boating around the marina and to a public boat ramp.

"The public will continue to have access to the marina's fuel berth via the proposed navigation channel," Ms Perry said.

Twenty-two swing moorings and 10 commercial moorings will be moved for the project.

Mr Binkin will pay for new public dinghy storage racks to "tidy up the foreshore and reduce foreshore damage", Ms Perry said.

Mr Binkin said a development application was being prepared for a second $8 million stage of work, including 110 dry storage berths, a 120-seat restaurant, a cafe and new hardstand, marine business and workshop areas.

The NSW Government last September approved a marina at Trinity Point in Morisset Park, that included 188 berths (two stages of 94 berths each), a conference centre, restaurant, cafe, shops, village piazza and boardwalk.

This does nothing to increase a most needed competitive enviroment in the marina/boat storage industry on Lake Macquarie but will be if some additional and competitively placed marinas are planned and approved. At this time due to lack of competition marinas quickly get richer and boat owners that are not wealthy get poorer.

very well said peter normal boat owners cannot afford to have their boat a t a marina , i had one there for 2 years not long ago and it was fee increase after fee increase, it finally got to around $380 dollars a month, that was enough it just wasnt worth it, just because you own a boat that does not mean you can afford around 100 dollars a week just to have it moored safely, what do you get for that , how much do they pay waterways, less than 1 months rental. as it is prices are very expensive at a marina, what will the price be for the restaurant if it goes ahead, who owns the swamp it is on , is it crown land? as the saying goes (BOAT ) Bring On Another Thousand

Peter, I also agree that Marina fees are expensive, but it is a choice you have, like owning waterfront property etc. We pay $430 per month for our 9 meter cruiser to be berthed, and it is very hard to find the money for us, but we make the most of it, and it is our choice to have it there at the ready. The Marina help out in all sorts of ways, buy keeping an eye on things, fixing up things via a telephone call, so it is the convenience factor we consider also. We use the boat more because it is easily accessible, and having it berthed make it easy to clean and maintain, hence maintaining its value.

I believe the improvements to this Marina will make our beautiful Lake Macquarie more appealing to boaters from Sydney, as the fees down there are double, and there is a heavy demand for fixed berths.

Peter, you might be better to look at dry storage???

Boats are expensive toys, but it is entirely your choice!

Cheer up, get out there and enjoy it!!!
