Maryville victim says apology won't heal him after years of abuse

16 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
HE endured 14 years of sexual and physical abuse while in an institution but David Owen says he does not hate the church that ran the orphanage or the government that put him there.

Mr Owen, of Maryville, will be one of hundreds of thousands of people watching an apology by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to the Forgotten Australians at 11am today.

The apology will be delivered to Australians and migrants who, as children, suffered abuse and neglect while in institutional care.

Mr Owen, 71, first spoke to The Herald in 1997 about his lifelong struggle with the trauma he endured while in the Catholic Church-run orphanage called Neerkol in north Queensland.

The Sisters of Mercy institution has since become notorious for its record of violence and abuse with a former priest and groundsman both since prosecuted for sex crimes.

Mr Owen's mother was forced to give him up in Cairns in 1938 after she was raped by a police officer.

He ended up in Neerkol where he endured years of sexual abuse at the hands of priests and violent bashings when he reported the incidents to the nuns.

Mr Owen went on to play football for Toowoomba with the likes of Wayne Bennett and said his short stint in prison for robbery in his 20s was easier than his time in Neerkol.

Mr Owen will watch Mr Rudd's apology today and said while it was welcome it would do little to help him.

"Some people might be healed, I myself won't be healed until I die."

He holds no bitterness against the Catholic Church or the Sisters of Mercy.

"It's not a hate, it's sort of a sadness it happened.

"It is a stain on your brain forever."

mother raped by a police man, sexual abused by priests, and bashed by nuns, all authority figures all hypocrites and all the lowest level of scum. it's a great credit to the then young david owens that he didnt spend all of his life in and out of prison, he certainly has no reason to r e s p e c t authority.

The abuse that Mr Owen and other defenceless children suffered at the hands of sadistic adults is beyond belief. I was raised Catholic, and have rejected the church as an adult and for my children - I wouldn't put them anywhere near a nun or a priest. I realise not all are bad, but why take the risk, when this sort of abuse has obviously been entrenched for decades? I wish Mr Owen all the best, he's a very brave man for speaking up. Remember, this is still happening to children who can't speak up fo themselves.

How many times can the clergy & their bishop (& Pope) enablers continue to say, "I'm Sorry" and still expect to be believed? I have been told countless times of the Graces to be garnered by forgiving those who have harmed us. But it is a Cheap Grace, when those asking pardon are not really sorry....Merely Terribly, TERRIBLY Sorry they got caught. There is no healing to be gained from these monstrously, perverted crimes against the Laws of Man, Nature & GOD. The wounds only scab, but they NEVER heal.

Some years ago I had a brush with death. Before surgery a volunteer church worker visited me and suggested, that if Sister agreed, Father would visit me. My response was 'No'. I had discovered during a 'retreat', state of grace depends on conscious. The bad news for the Catholic Church keeps coming. You have no guarantee what 'priest' will turn up!
