Matt Hall offers joy flights in his Mustang fighter

29 Oct, 2009 10:28 AM
WORLD class race pilot Matt Hall is offering joy flights over Maitland in his prized Mustang fighter.

It is only the second time Mustang flights have been offered in the Hunter, Mr Hall says.

The Merewether pilot is flying his P-51D Mustang from the Royal Newcastle Aero Club aerodrome at Rutherford until Sunday, November 8.

Sharing the cockpit with Mr Hall is not for the faint-hearted.

He recently returned from a successful debut appearance in the Red Bull air race in Spain, where the adrenalin junkie finished third and broke several rookie records.

"I can take people on a smooth, gentle flight or demonstrate aerobatic manoeuvres that were used in combat fighting," Mr Hall said.

"Whatever we do it's fun and I get so much satisfaction seeing other people get enjoyment out of something that I have loved for so long."

Mr Hall left the Royal Australian Air Force in January after 18 years to pursue his dream of air racing.

"This year was an amazing one for me personally and professionally, but I have given myself a few weeks off and what better way to spend my time than flying a plane that I love in an area that I love," he said.

Nice ride. Personally I think the Mustang was one of the best prop driven aircraft of its time..... right behind the Hawker Sea Fury! Reason being, that any person with some talent could have flown these (probably not very well though looking at the fatalities.) But now days, you need 3 Unit maths, science and a university degree to even comprehend the cockpit never less try and fly them at the limits modern pilots do. My teenager years of flying fast jets were dashed when I realised I was too tall.....pfft. Congrats on your first year in the Air Race Matt. Well done.
