Mayor Tate dumped from Hunter Development Corporation

05 Nov, 2009 03:00 AM
NEWCASTLE Lord Mayor John Tate has lashed out after being unceremoniously dumped from the board of the Hunter Development Corporation, branding the decision "disgusting" and politically motivated.

Minister for the Hunter Jodi McKay released a media statement last night saying two new directors had been appointed to the corporation: former Hunter Business Chamber president Karen Howard and executive director of the Sydney Chamber of Commerce Patricia Forsythe.

Ms McKay said she would "like to thank the four departing directors, Mr Neil Bird, Newcastle Lord Mayor Cr John Tate, Megan Maybury and Suzanne Ryan for their years of service to the board".

But that gratitude was not well received, with Cr Tate calling it a "slap in the face to the city" of Newcastle, which had always had a lord mayor on the corporation's board.

Cr Tate said Ms McKay did not even extend him the "common courtesy" of telling him he had been dumped.

He found out when he called the chief executive officer to inquire about the board's next meeting.

"The Minister could have easily called me and said 'we're making some changes'," Cr Tate said.

"The only logical explanation I can see is that it's purely political against the backdrop of the next state election," he said.

"I have indicated I may run in the next election I have not said I would. I will make that decision in the proper time."

Ms McKay said last night Cr Tate had been dropped because it was important not to play favourites.

"As a growth centre, the Hunter Development Corporation covers 11 local government areas in the Hunter and it is important the new focus of the corporation is not favouring one council over another," Ms McKay said.

Ms McKay easily forgets it was Mr Tate throwing his hat in the ring at the last state election is the only reason she is in politics. I just hope that she has plans after the 2011 election as she will not have it as easy at the next election.

Of course it's a political decision John. Every committee in the "city of committees" is political a series of political appointments. Any decision made in Newcastle by these committees has to go to Sydney for ratification. You know that Mr. Lord Mayor. And this time don't sit on the fence too long before you declare yourself up for State election. People don't like that.

I wonder if Mayor Tate would have been dumped had he indicated he may run on the Labor ticket at the next election. I would wager that will be the election when the Minister (for just about everything meaningless ) MCKay will receive the Golden Boot award from a totally disenchanted electorate. Perhaps Mayor Tate will run against McKay and there would lie the poetic justice.

Boards get stale if there is no turnover of members. Board members should have appropriate qualifications. HDC covers the whole Hunter, not just Newcastle. Mayor Tate has been there a long time, has limited qualifications and is not the mayor of the Hunter Valley. So it was time to go..... Quietly and politetly!

Jodi didn't like it when the mayor of Gloucester was ousted by democratic vote of the councillors but here she goes and boots the mayor of Newcastle off a committee representing the Hunter and replaces him with a representative from Sydney,, Good one Jodi...

The sensible option would be for the local councils to elect one member from among their own to be a local government representative on the HDC.

I hope Tate does run and she gets kicked out all the way back to her NBN auto cue and she takes the Pasha rudder with her

Disgusting is one word for the Mayor Tate's removal. The Minister for Everything is showing her true colours now. The pathetic excuse provided by the Minister flies in the face of the government's own plan for the HUnter. Newcastle is to be the prime centre. It needs to be represented by its mayor. But, wait, did I hear Mayor Tate was thinking about standing for election? Fatal mistake. Labor does not think. It schemes, Stand please Mr Mayor and put things right when JMcK is gone!
