 Men's vote carries their day

Men's vote carries their day

12 Mar, 2009 09:07 AM
A MOTION for Maitland City Council to give equal support to International Men's and Women's Days has provoked a minor battle of the sexes with the city's two female councillors voting against the proposal.

Cr Philip Penfold put the motion to a council meeting on Tuesday, calling for the council to support International Men's Day to an extent similar to the support for International Women's Day, which Cr Penfold said cost the council about $1500.

Cr Penfold said he was concerned that challenges facing men, such as serious health conditions, were not as well-promoted as those faced by women.

He argued the council's support of the day in Maitland, on or about November 19, would help to address the imbalance.

Cr Lisa Tierney, with the backing of Cr Loretta Baker, argued support was warranted to help tackle matters such as male suicide rates but that Cr Penfold's motion was premature and should be deferred for a year.

She said the women's day events in Maitland were mostly the result of the groundwork of women's community groups rather than the council's efforts.

Similar work would need to first be fostered within the community for the men's day.

Women faced different social challenges to men.

"Being equal isn't about giving everyone the same thing, it's about levelling the playing field," Cr Tierney told the meeting.

Cr Steve Procter said that while "my wife reckons every day is men's day", the council should be able to make what was "not a difficult decision" to support men as well.

The male councillors carried the motion.

Disgraceful attitude shown by these female councillors. Imagine it was the other way round with the males voting against equal funding to a female cause, it would be considered a national disgrace. Stop making a fool of us and giving males more ammunition to attack our credibility which I have to admit these days is well and truly justified.

I'm a bloke and I find the point of an International Men's Day as ridiculous.

Excellent! For (women) to claim that "every day is international men's day" is invalid. If every day were international men's day men would already have been successful at drawing attention to the epidemic of male suicide, lack of funding for severe health issues such as cancer and depression, and we would see something done about the low numbers (and marks) of males in higher education. For these reasons and MANY more a grass-roots international Men's Day is beginning to thrive and will eventually bring these legitimate health concerns to the public. Be sure of one thing: "every day is international men's day" is code-speak for I-don't-give-a-Damn-about-male. Our young boys particularly need saving from these male-hating women, because boys self esteem is rock-bottom and thier cries for help are being drowned out by feminist "jokes" about how undeserving males are. Put International Men's day on your calendar and lets speak out on behalf of our male children. It is celebrated on November 19. Peter

It is time men be counted, enough is enough and to flagrantly wipe off men because they have not facilitated time to foster a spirit within the community to justify acknowledgement of such a day is extremist and something men should not tolerate any longer. Men are entitled to an identity and a life also, thanks Phillip for making a stand on our behalf.

The old joke about feminists is that they simply "want more equality than everyone else". Thank goodness the Maitland Council sees that all people are disadvantaged in different ways, not just women. There are black people being disadvantaged in dominant white populations, protestants in Catholic strongholds, women in male dominated workforces, and men in family and health domains dominated by women who receive 97% of all funding. Lets stop the shreiking about who most needs recognition and instead recognize everyone has unique and varied experiences worth observing. Moreover, lets celebrate the good that boys and men do contribute to the community and to family life!

these two female councillors cannot see the wood for the tress!perhaps they need to open their eyes and learn before they open their mouths so something more constructive than global warning comes out.

Men need help. Sure at the top of the pile there are a few powerful men, but at the bottom there are many many really disadvantaged men. The worst-off are men. Men (on average) are worse-off than women. There is not one measure of disadvantage where men are (on average) better off than women (except income, because women don't do mining and rarely put in long hours developing their careers through their 30's). Not only that, but young women (before they take their work-life balance holiday earn MORE than men on average. Men die younger, get more preventable illness, are more likely to be convicted of a crime and get longer sentences when they are. Dads work 5hrs a day longer than mothers in PAID work (and what home needs 5hrs of housework every day?). Boys used to get the same results at school, but now get 20% lower marks, so that now two thirds of uni students are women. For every female suicide, there are (probably) 9 male suicides. The FATHERHOOD AND FAMILIES MOVEMENT needs funding to compensate for the wealth of the many professional feminists. We need a Men's day, because men and boys need help. Last Sunday was International Women's Day. Did you see it reported all over the media? If so you must be reading different sources from me. Hardly a mention. Let them have their International Men's Day. It will be widely promoted everywhere, so when Women's Day comes around they will have no choice but to acknowledge it as well.

Hardly a mention of women's day? Lol. A Google search shows 3270000 million entries for International Women's Day. A comparative search for International Men's Day reveals: wait for it............ 5,270. Was Women's Day reported all over the media? You bet it was. According to the official International woman's day website there were 976 major IWD events in 62 countries, and of those a staggering 162 formal events were held in Australia (check it here if you wish: http://www.internationalwomensday.com/ Now, guess how many International Men's day celebrations were held last year in Australia? Well, actually just 1 (one). Poor neglected International women's day.
