Mereweather Beach overhaul to begin

16 Aug, 2010 04:00 AM
LESS than a month after approving a plan to give Merewether's waterfront a facelift, civic leaders are poised to order a $2 million cheque to start work.

The $6.66 million Merewether Beach public domain plan envisages two new cafes, a rebuilt surf club, an amphitheatre, public art, widened footpaths and extra car parking spaces.

Newcastle City Council adopted it in July after receiving positive public feedback.

Tomorrow, the council will consider allocating an extra $1.2 million, as part of a quarterly budget review, to finance stages one and two of the Merewether Beach plan around John Parade and Watkins Street.

Works include a widened promenade, traffic and car parking changes, a viewing platform, and a lifeguard tower.

Cr Tim Crakanthorp is keen for work to start, after lobbying for the plan, saying the $2 million allocation, if approved tomorrow, would go a long way.

"Instead of allocating little amounts here and there . . . such a significant amount to complete stages one and two shows that council means business," he said.

Let's get started as soon as possible. We welcome every investment, every renovation in every spot of the region so that more people come out and be part of the commercial, social activities. We hear nice projects, but it unfortunately takes too long to realize them. We need quick decisions, quick actions. Everywhere needs a face lift as the facilities, infrastructure have not been touched for years. Nice looking, well maintained places would attract more people and would promote better social life towards a more civilized society. We need to provide means of a civilization so that people behave in a social manner. Anti social behaviors tend to reduce in places which offer nice social outlook to its residents. Abandoned areas tend to encourage violations. As there would always be a number of offenders even in nice looking civilized areas, we want the City Council to install CCTV's and to increase the number of street lights. Without ensuring safety of its residents, upgrading the facilities may fail to achieve its purpose.
