 Millions for Hunter jails, courts

Millions for Hunter jails, courts

09 Jun, 2010 04:00 AM
MORE than $60 million will go towards the $94 million expansion of Cessnock Correctional Centre, in a state budget comparatively strong on law and order projects in the Hunter.

The project, to add 250 beds, will receive $61.9 million in 2010-11 to continue construction, Correctional Services Minister Phil Costa said.

St Heliers Correctional Centre at Muswellbrook will receive $650,000 to upgrade its security system and a wastewater treatment system.

Muswellbrook's community offender services will get a $50,000 office fit out.

On top of $4.7 million for the Newcastle court precinct, the budget delivered $200,000 to fit out a court room at Broadmeadow's Children's Court, and $200,000 to upgrade Toronto court house, to include registry and computer provisions.

As well, $50,000 will be spent on a security upgrade of Maitland court house's offender-handling facilities.

About $7 million was allocated for the completion next year of the $12.6 million Raymond Terrace police station, which Police Minister Michael Daley said would house a range of command groups including highway patrol, a crime management unit and court processors.

The $17.3 million Glendale police station was allocated $7.8 million and is listed for completion in 2012.

Prisoner-handling areas at Nelson Bay police station would be upgraded as part of broader spending worth $3 million.

Police Citizen Youth Clubs in Cessnock, Maitland, Newcastle, Port Stephens, Lake Macquarie and Muswellbrook will get state-funded civilian managers as part of $3.9 million in state-wide spending on the positions.

Nine fire engines worth about $5 million will go to NSW Fire Brigades stations in Morisset, Toronto, Newcastle, Belmont, Cardiff, East Maitland, Tingira Heights, Hamilton and Doyalson.

Cardiff and Merriwa fire stations will be improved. Personal protective equipment storage, training areas and change rooms at Cardiff will be enhanced. Merriwa will get a new kitchen and training amenities, and updated bathrooms.

About $145,000 will go to State Emergency Service units at Port Stephens, Tomaree, Taree and Maitland.

Its a shame that the $94m expansion at Cessnock Prison to add 250 beds was not being spent on an 250 bed aged care facility.

Does this government have any clue at all? A year ago they were going to close Cessnock jail - now they plan to spend $94m on it? Just what is going on in this broken state?

$94 million for 250 beds, I think that equates to about $376,000 per bed. Some place they are going to have, might book myself a room.
