Minmi family braces for the impact of electricity price hikes

19 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
MINMI mother of two Jodie Cartwright is bracing herself for the next round of electricity price hikes, as forecast yesterday by the pricing watchdog.

"I'm shocked. It's going to have a huge impact on families, it's such a big jump," she said.

The Cartwright family is still reeling from the size of its power bill after last year's price rise.

"We actually took the bill out into the street to compare it with our neighbours to see if it was just us but everybody was in the same boat," Mrs Cartwright said.

The family has already started turning appliances off at the wall and has been trying to reduce electricity usage.

But Mrs Cartwright and husband Glenn are not finding it easy.

"We have a pool, which we got four years ago, before the prices really start to change," Mrs Cartwright said.

"We've certainly noticed a difference in the bills.

"I would like to know more about the Government's compensation for families. Where does it leave us?"

The fact is that electricity prices are going to rise and everyone will be turning off the power to save money. This will then drive down the profit the electricity companies need to keep there investors happy and to have the money for on going repairs. All this will mean that the electricity companies will seek further increases and this all due to the Rudd government push to have there ETS passed even if it means doing it through the back door. Mr Rudd needs the ETS not to save the planet but to save him and the massive debt he has put Australia in.

surely the increases must only be to make more money for the government to throw around and waste for years staff were laid off and contractors used to their work and now when I look around townthere are new power poles being put new cables being slung and new bigger substations being built is being done because of growing population or becasuse of neglect over to many years or is it just simply caused by concern over CLIMATR CHANGE isn't it wonderful for governments have something blame it on. What are other states charging for their electicity?

This is really a State Tax in Wolf's Clothing. This has nothing to do with Emissions Trading Scheme and all to do about State Government taxing monies off the power companies that used to be used for infrastructure and maintenance of the power grid. The power stations and infrastructure is in disrepair (That's what the sell off was about). Kristina Keneally come clean!

"Privatisation - you will pay more". The unions have been noticeably quiet on this issue.

Just like Tillegra Dam - where we are already paying for something that hasn't even been legislated - we will be paying heavily for the effects of an ETS that will probably never get through Federal Parliament. Will we as consumers be guaranteed to get this money back if the ETS does not get legislated before the next State Govt election? I think not. I suggest we don't pay the extra, and let them send the debt collectors around.....Enough is enough!!

if you can afford a pool surely you can afford to pay power bills without other tax payers help!

How can they put the prices up whilst still waiting for the decision on climate change. This Climate change crap has not been proven and I believe a lot of answer to the general public need to come forth with practical answers not bureaucratic hearsay. Like I have said before the weather gets hot in summer and cold in winter depending on where you live on this planet earth. This is just a grab for cash, when they get the cash what are they going to do with it. Answers please.

Of course electricity prices will increase. the more we use the more infrastructure everyone needs to pay for. If we all do everything we can to reduce our energy usage, they won't need to build extra capacity, so we wont pay for extra capacity. I've just orderd a solar panel system that will generate most of our families electricity usage, and with the current feed in tariff and rebates will pay for itself in about 4 years. We also have energy efficient appliances and lighting and I don't expect to pay for any power until the price rises to closer to the feed in tariff once the solar is installed.

Use less, rebates still have to be paid for. Just by all of us, through our taxes. If you had to pay the real cost I doubt you'd pay. These rebates are part of the future price increase, as much as the infrastructure. But yeah, if you can afford a pool you can hardly whinge eh?
