Mixed emotions on the menu

29 Oct, 2008 07:28 AM
LAKE Macquarie restaurants La De Da's and Anacapri have hit back at celebrity chef Matt Moran after his stinging criticism of their menus on The Chopping Block last night.

In the end, the all-girl team at La De Da's in Swansea scored a 31/2-star rating on the popular Nine Network cook-off show, winning $20,000 prize money to keep their ailing business afloat.

"We had been having some real financial troubles and we just needed someone to show us where we were going wrong," La De Da's head chef Kim Davis said.

However, the road to victory was not smooth, with advice from the show's host, Moran, often leaving a bad taste in the mouths of staff at the rival eateries.

"Just the emotions that went on over those three days of filming were unbelievable I was just crying all the time," said Ms Davis, who was demoted to second chef for the duration of the program.

Co-owner of Toronto restaurant Anacapri, Terry Teagle, said Moran's advice was hard to swallow.

Chef Moran said the food served by Anacapri was the worst he had tasted, and criticised a serving of chicken schnitzel before throwing it into Lake Macquarie.

"It's a joke," Mr Teagle said yesterday. "It's the biggest seller I've got and since the show I have sold heaps of them. The whole snapper that he wanted us to serve is still sitting in the freezer."

Of TV stardom, Mr Teagle said: "I didn't take anything away from it at all."

Anacapri ended up with a three-star rating on the show.

Matt Moran is just a glorified Chef with a low rating show. The only sour taste in his mouth is his own breath.

Gee it's unlike people from Newcastle having a whinge isn't it??? Take some critisism from a top chef and turn it around into a positive , obviously from watching the food just wasn't up to scratch. I wouldn't go criticising Matt Moran if you haven't dined in his restaurant.

I've eaten at one of the two restaurants featured on the program. I thought the review was quite honest (and sometimes the truth hurts). I'm not quite sure why people without a hospitality background decide to manage restaurants and can't seem take advise from industry experts when their businesses are failing. Unfortunately 3 days advice from Australia's leading chef isn't going to convince me to eat at either restaurant.

Matt Moran is well qualified to give advice. Have you ever been to Arias? Both restaurants needed updating, as well as the schnitzel chomping locals. If it wasn't for chefs such as Matt we would all still be sitting down to prawn cocktails and chicken maryland.

I have experienced dining at both restaurants and i consider La De Da's as a superior restaurant. Their food is always outstanding and their staff courteous efficent and friendly.

Thank you Matt Moran for highlighting the sad state of affairs that is the Newcastle dining scene. Please - let's improve the quality of food and service available.

I beleive Matt Moran had a very strong case against both restaurants. Newcastle sadly has been stuck in the old days of steel and the old bargain schnitzel. It's a shame that Anacapri will still stick to the same old stuff.Newcastle does want better quality a snapper is twice as good a a frozen old peice of chook!

I have eaten at one of the two restaurants before and after they were featured on the program. I thoroughly agree with the review and could not see any improvement.
