Motorsport could help Cessnock turn top gear into top dollar

11 Mar, 2010 08:42 AM
A MAJOR motorsport event could help Cessnock turn top gear into top dollar.

The Herald can reveal that an application to bring an alcohol-free car event to Cessnock will be lodged with Cessnock City Council in the next few weeks, potentially making the region home to one of the country's biggest motorsport events.

The proposed Street Machine magazine Autofest would run at Cessnock Airport in late October, with crowds of up to 6000.

Event promoter Mark Arblaster said the Hunter was a perfect venue for a major car show.

"Newcastle and that area has the strongest car culture demographic of anywhere in Australia," Mr Arblaster said.

"We'd like to focus on building something big here because we can see the growth potential."

"If we were pulling eight or nine thousand in three years, it'd rank among the top four events in the country."

Mr Arblaster estimated revenue from accommodation, food and repeat visitors could be "pushing into the millions" if the event grew.

Newcastle Sporting Car Club president David McNeill welcomed Autofest, claiming it could meet demand within the region and bring new visitors.

But Central Hunter police have opposed the plan, saying it contradicts safe driving messages they are striving to promote in the area.

Cessnock Mayor Alison Davey declined to comment until the application was lodged with the council.

Auto Salon have it here so they had rules and all had to abide by the rules or they were out of the show for good and not to return. As long as the Venue itself doesnt apply for a licience to sell Alcohol. Make it families.

while i appreciate that this area is a hotbed for cars enthusiasts i just dont know if it will satisfy the illegal burnouts, drag racing, drifting etc that is booming in cessnock. i worry that it will instead just enhance the already rampant illegal drag racing that happens. some of the nearby country rds to cessnock are just lawless drag strips. Personally i think the police need to be better resourced. Its seriously out of control. i worry about innocent others sharing the rds, particularly when i hear regular hooning and the outrageous speeds regularly undertaken.seriously in my view sum rds in the cessnock LGA are lawless dragstrips!!Especially as you head out towards the rural zones.

Surely Cessnock Council will stuff it up somehow!

This is exactly what is needed in NSW. There will always be people who want to go fast but don't have a place where they can do it in a controlled environment - so they do it on the road. To reduce Police and RTA concerns the promoters need to focus heavily on selling the message "cruise on the road and speed on the track". (see www.survivetheride.org). A well organised and controlled event would establish an example that could be duplicated in other rural areas where airports exist. A series of club events around country NSW would provide the opportunity to develop the motorsport teams and champions of tomrrow. Good luck.

If police and council work with promoters this is an ideal opportunity to control some of the unwanted behaviours of the hoons in the town but you will always have the elements of dickheads that are never going to do the right thing

great. Was that 6000 or 60,000? Cessnock Council should build a speedway. Gilgandra has and its great.

This is how it is, If your complaining about car enthusiasts it is because you have a narrow minded view and don't understand the culture. As for the hoons on the streets that everyone complains about 99 per cent of those are wanna be's. If people realized the money and man hours that go into the cars they would realize they are blaming the wrong group. junkies get safe injecting rooms, free needles, methadone etc and people complain about a legal car event, the police should support it,it will be easier for then to photograph the cars and write down rego's so they can impound them later
