MPs urged to boycott Newcastle coal-loader opening over non-union agreement

27 Apr, 2010 09:23 AM
STATE and Federal Hunter MPs, and potentially NSW Premier Kristina Keneally, have been urged to boycott the opening of Newcastle's new $1 billion coal loader because of a non-union agreement governing its operations.

Newcastle Trades Hall has written to the MPs asking them not to turn out for the official event and photo opportunity on May 3 at the BHP Billiton-backed Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group terminal, in a sign of support of unions' concerns.

It is understood Ms Keneally is at this stage expected to attend, but senior union officials are to approach the Government about the issue.

Trades Hall secretary Gary Kennedy said the infrastructure group's five-year non-union agreement had been registered in the "dying days" of the WorkChoices legislation, despite the region's history of "minimal industrial action".

"We're saying to the politicians, show your support by not going," Mr Kennedy said.

Trades Hall also sought last year the support of the International Transport Workers' Federation.

Federal Newcastle MP Sharon Grierson and Federal Minister and Charlton MP Greg Combet said they would not attend the opening because of commitments elsewhere.

Swansea MP Robert Coombs, a former Maritime Union of Australia official, said he would decline any invitation.

Hunter Minister Jodi McKay said she had accepted the invitation before receiving the Trades Hall letter, but would reconsider closer to the date.

What a joke, will the unions not use the facility as it built on work choices. NO they will be there with bells on demanding higher wages for there members. Can you imagine just how much this facility would have cost and how long it would have taken if the Union had any say in what was happening. You could have bet your last dollar there would have been strikes and massive pay increases for no other reason than it was a major project and the unions would have had the company by the short and curlies to have it finished on time and to start to recoup all the money spent building the coal loader.

We should all quive in shame as the coal loader has totally ruined forever a significant and peaceful section of our harbour just because of a fight between coal companies.

Good old Newcastle! Attempts made to improve productivity and efficiency and always the old guard frustrates it. Some cannnot drag themselves into the 21st century.

My understanding is that the employees were paid exceptionally well to bring construction in on schedule

Aren't the Unions dead yet? Just another reason why Newcastle will never get ahead.

Employers realise that to get good workers they need to get looked after to get projects completed. Unions are outdated for the construction and mining industries in the year 2010.
