Nationals in campaign for Cessnock

31 Jan, 2011 03:00 AM
THE parliamentary wing of the NSW Nationals will visit Cessnock today to bolster its campaign for the previously safe Labor seat where the government is facing a mounting backlash over its sale of electricity assets.

Nationals MPs including leader Andrew Stoner will meet constituents at the Cessnock Ex-Services Club. Mr Stoner will make a road safety announcement at Millfield.

Energy spokesman Duncan Gay, Upper House MP Trevor Khan, a member of the committee inquiring into the state government's "gentrader" transactions, and natural resource spokeswoman Katrina Hodgkinson will meet families of workers at Kurri Kurri's Hydro aluminium smelter.

The smelter was drawn into the controversy of the government's electricity assets sale after the committee advising the government on the process blocked Delta Electricity from signing an electricity contract extension with Hydro.

The company had said hundreds of jobs could be at risk because of the investment uncertainty the quashed contract had created. Its existing contract is part of the Delta West bundle of assets the government has sold.

Alison Davey, 72, is standing for the Nationals in the seat while serving as the area's independent mayor. She has said she would serve only one term if elected.

The ALP is believed to have conducted polling in the seat in recent weeks, asking voters about Cr Davey, Labor candidate Clayton Barr and Greens candidate Cr James Ryan, and then of a two party preferred choice of Cr Davey and Mr Barr.

It follows the Nationals polling in December that showed it had a chance to take the seat.
